A RESOLUTION honoring Special Olympics Day on March 26, 2014.

WHEREAS, the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games will be held on June 14-21, 2014, in New Jersey. The Games will be the third USA Games that Special Olympics has held, and they will bring together 3,500 athletes and 1,000 coaches from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Games will feature 14 sports as well as a number of cultural and social activities for the athletes; and

WHEREAS, Team Kentucky will once again compete in this historic event, bringing a team made up of 39 athletes, one unified partner, and 16 coaches. Team Kentucky includes athletes from London in Laurel County and Wittensville in Johnson County, areas that have not previously been represented on the team; and

WHEREAS, Team Kentucky's athletes will compete in seven sports at the Games: Aquatics (Swimming), Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Flag Football, and Golf; and

WHEREAS, on March 26, 2014, this Commonwealth celebrates and honors Special Olympics Day; and

WHEREAS, this day is a testimony to all the athletes and coaches who have made Special Olympics an integral part of Kentucky's athletic tradition, and it is also a rightful acknowledgement of Team Kentucky and all the men and women who will compete at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games. This body recognizes the profound meaning of March 26, 2014, and the overarching importance of Special Olympics Day while offering those athletes who will represent the Commonwealth at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games best wishes as they set off in pursuit of gold;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

âSection 1. The Senate hereby honors Special Olympics Day on March 26, 2014, and wishes the best of luck to Team Kentucky as it prepares to compete in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in June.

âSection 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Special Olympics Day.

âSection 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Dennis Parrett for delivery.
