A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO DIRECT THAT THE FLAGS ON THE STATEHOUSE DOME BE FLOWN AT HALFSTAFF ON FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2005 OUT OF DEEPEST RESPECT FOR HIS HOLINESS POPE JOHN PAUL II.

Whereas, beloved Catholic Church and spiritual leader Pope John Paul II is being laid to rest Friday, April 8, 2005; and

Whereas, Pope John Paul II, the first Pole elected to the papacy and first nonItalian elected Pope in over 455 years, was elected to the papacy on October 16, 1978; and

Whereas, the Pope distinguished his Pontificate through extensive travel, working to bring down communism, and fostering peace among nations, religions, and cultures; and

Whereas, among his travels, the Pope made seven trips to the United States and South Carolinians were honored when he visited the Palmetto State in 1987, where the Holy Father was warmly welcomed by people of all faiths; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly wish to express their deepest sorrow and greatest respect for the life and legacy of such a distinguished and beloved world and spiritual leader. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, direct that the flags on the Statehouse dome be flown at halfstaff on Friday, April 8, 2005, out of deepest respect for His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Director of the Office of General Services, State Budget and Control Board.
