TEACHER STATEMENT OF BENEFITS
Philosophy
The Avon Community School Corporation strives to provide an excellent working environment. Employees are important to the organization. A primary goal of the school corporation is to provide quality services in a safe environment for almost 9,300 pupils. Avon employees, therefore, are expected to adopt the philosophy, “What did I do for a child today?”
Contract Terms
The contract day is seven (7) hours and 45 minutes, and teachers work 185 days per year. A complete copy of the contract can be accessed on the T drive (in Word) in the Teacher Contract folder.
Union
Teachers are represented by the Avon Federation of Teachers Union (AFT) which has the exclusive right to bargain and represent all teachers. Teachers may choose to become a member or not to become a member.
Pay Schedule
A pay schedule for each certified position is approved by the Board of School Trustees. Avon pays on a 26 paycheck schedule for all certified staff.
Insurance
Eligibility
· To be eligible for these insurance plans, employees must be in a permanent position for more than 30 days (i.e., substitutes and temporary employees are not eligible).
· Teachers who are employed on less than a full day or full week basis shall have a pro-rated board contribution to the health insurance plans and benefits.

**Keep in mind payroll deductions begin one month prior to coverage since Anthem bills Avon one month in advance.
Long Term Disability:
The board provides a long-term disability group insurance plan with each teacher paying one dollar ($1.00) per year.
Voluntary Insurance
These are optional voluntary benefits. However, it is mandatory that you meet with a Steele Insurance representative. After completing the Steele Insurance informational form, Steele Insurance will contact you to set up a meeting.
Worker’s Compensation
The school corporation carries worker’s compensation insurance for all employees.
Retirement Benefits
TRF: Employees in this group are eligible for Teacher Retirement Fund (TRF) benefits. The Corporation contribution is 7.5% of the teacher’s base pay. The Corporation also contributes the teacher’s 3% share for a total of 10.5% of the teacher’s base pay into this Defined Pension Plan.
401(a) Plan: Teachers are provided an employer paid 401(a) benefit of 4% and are vested after five (5) years of service. The 401(a) 4% contributions are calculated using the teacher’s base salary plus the TRF 3% (Base salary + 3%).
403(b) Plan: All employees are eligible to participate in a 403(b) retirement plan. Employees may contribute a set deduction up to the IRS limitation each year. Employees are always 100% vested in their contributions. This is a voluntary retirement plan. Coffman Financial will contact you only if you choose to meet with them.
Leave Days
Eligibility: To be eligible for leave days, employees must be employed in a permanent position.
Sick Leave: Each certified employee will receive ten (10) days each year. When employment is less than a year, sick days are prorated. Sick days can accumulate to 190 days. It is ACSC’s practice to require a doctor’s note for absences for three (3) or more consecutive days.
· Family Illness Leave – Each certified employee may use nine (9) sick days to care for a sick family member. See Administrative Guidelines 4430 for more details.
Personal
Days: An employee may use three (3) personal leave days each year, which if unused are converted to sick days.
Bereavement
Leave: Each employee shall be entitled to be absent on account of death of a relative no more than the number of days immediately following the date of death as follows:
· Five (5) consecutive work days exclusive of paid holidays for death of husband, wife, son, daughter, stepmother, stepfather, stepson, stepdaughter, brother, sister, father, mother, or any relative living in the household.
· Three (3) consecutive work days in a five calendar period, exclusive of paid holidays for death of grandchild, father-in-law, mother-in-law.
· Two (2) consecutive work days in a four calendar day period, exclusive of paid holidays for brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, grandfather, grandmother, niece, nephew, uncle, aunt or grandparents-in-law.
FMLA / LOA: ACSC follows federal guidelines when approving an employee for an FMLA (Federal Medical Leave
of Absence). ACSC recommends that all employees absent five (5) or more consecutive days
contact the Benefits Coordinator to learn about their FMLA or LOA rights.
