Job Profile: Athletic Director, Head of the Physical

Description

The athleticdirector and head ofthe physical education departmentis expected to exert leadershipinextra-curricular activities and manage facilities and maintenance for the extra-curricular school program in addition to any Physical Education or Fitness subject requirements.

Performance Areas

A.Leadership: Providesclear vision and direction for the athletic program. Directs development and growth of the extra-curricular program. Develops the athletic department based on the team philosophy of ministry.

B.Organizational Development: Works with the school staff and community to develop and implement a positive athleticprogram. Oversees the staff in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

C.Athletic Facilities and Resources Oversight: Oversees stewardship and appropriate upkeep of the school’s athletic facilities and resources including the gymnasium, outdoor courts, swimming pool, upper field, and the respective equipment.

C.Fiscal Management: Responsible for maximizing the finances of the Physical Education Department including curriculum, equipment, travel, tournament and maintenance requirements.

D.Communication: Effectively communicates with thedirector, faculty and staff, parents, students and local community about events of an extra-curricular nature.

E.Public Relations:Promotes a positive image of the school to the different constituent groups of the school community, Penang, and the Southeast Asian region.

F.Educational Environment and Student Welfare:Provides leadership which includes supervising the department teachers, coaches, officials and students.

G.Other: Performs other tasks as needed.

Task Inventory

This is a general list of most tasks and activities that the athletic director is typically responsible for over the span of an academic year.

Leadership:

  • Builds a first class, competitive athletic department with a sense of purpose that inspires the staff, parents, and students to maintain a sense of excellence in extra-curricular athletics.
  • Serves on the Calendar Committee.
  • Chairs Sports Council meetings.
  • Determineswhich sports will be available and the dates of major athletic events for the school year (e.g.home andaway tournaments, games, MSSPP hosting).
  • Provides and/or advertises professional development opportunitiesfor the coaching staff and officials.
  • Ensures that MSSPP options and other sporting programs align with Dalat’s school program and schedule.
  • Communicates with coaches individually about problems or differing philosophies when the need arises.
  • Supervises, trainsand evaluates national staff workers assigned to the physical education department.

Organizational Development:

  • Determines which sports will be available to the students, in conjunction with interested staff members, coaches and Sports Council.
  • Solicits, selects and supervises coaches, officials, supervisors, intramural coordinators and advises them of their job expectations.
  • Coordinates and communicates athletic schedules and events to the DalatInternationalSchool community by posting facility usage and events on the intranet Sports Calendar and provides a weekly submission to Dalat News.
  • Supervises and evaluates coaching staff.
  • Schedules practices, games, tournaments and venues for athletic teams and events.
  • Implements and evaluates awards procedures in athletics and make recommendations to the High School Awards Committee.
  • Attends MSSPP organizational meetings and other local sports coordinators meetings to enter teams as possible.
  • Trains and provides table officials for games and submits their service points to the academic secretary.
  • Ensures coaches submit completed team roosters and submits service and activity points to the academic secretary.

Athletic Facilities and Resources Oversight:

  • Evaluates the facilities and provides recommendations for the security, safety, and proper use and maintenance of the gymnasium, outdoor courts, upper field and swimming pool.
  • Acquires, maintains, and supervises the use of athletic equipment.
  • Orders trophies and medals for on-campus tournaments and for track andfield meets.
  • Purchases, maintains and keeps record of team uniforms.
  • Obtains quotes for major maintenance repair(e.g. resurfacing courts, outdoor equipment).
  • Works with the director of development to improve facilities and programs.

Fiscal Management:

  • As Physical Education Department Head, presents Physical Education budget to the High School Principal.
  • As Athletic Director, determines a budget for athletics and intramurals program with input from participating coaches and determines an educational supplies and equipment budget for grades 5-12.
  • Determines schedule for off-campus groups using upper field, gymnasium and collects fees when applicable.
  • Locates and pays officials and assistants for games and tournaments.
  • Works with the director of development to raise money for projects.

Communication:

  • Contributes written articles to the Dalat News.
  • Communicates news of an extra-curricular nature to parents and the local community.
  • Plans events such as games and tournaments both home and away well inadvance and adds these to the school calendar,intranet Sports Calendar, Dalat News and sends e-mails to parents when possible.
  • Responds to e-mail communication from staff, school board members, school constituents, prospective families, etc.
  • Relays important school information to students via the Daily Bulletin, assemblies, and chapel times.

Public Relations:

  • Promotes a positive relationship between the parents, teachers, coaches and students in the Dalat community.
  • Promotes a positive relationship between local schools including international schools across Malaysia and in Southeast Asia.
  • Solicits feedback from students, parents, staff and community on improvement areas and reports to administration on actions taken or needed follow-up.

Educational Environment andStudent Welfare:

  • Works with facilities coordinator and security supervisor to ensure safe facilities.
  • Ensures that all documents are in order for away/overnight activities.
  • Provides safe, proven and trustworthy transportation for extra-curricular trips.
  • Ensures coaches complete team rosters at the beginning of the season and communicates with the Student Services Team regarding students involved in athletic activities that are struggling academically.

Other:

  • Attends school’s professional development program. Develops and implements a professional development plan. Encourages department personnel to do the same.
  • Performs other tasks as needed or requested by the high school principal.

Physical Education Department Head:

  • Recommends course offerings, prerequisites for courses, and learning objectives for courses in the physical education department.
  • Ensures equipment, supplies, teacher resources and training are available to accomplish these objectives.
  • Provides leadership to the department by communicating with teachers with through regularly scheduled meetings to achieve:

-departmental unity.

-effective use of personnel.

-on-going development of excellent courses.

-establishing goals for the department.

-being a resource person for teachers working within the department.

-formally visiting their departments classes and providing teachers with suggestions for improvement.

  • Presents, with departmental teacher input, end-of-year department course awards.

Reports To

The High School Principal

Qualifications

Required qualifications of the athletic director include the following:

  • B.A./B.S. degree in education or related field;
  • Administrative experience;
  • Coaching experience.

Preferred qualifications of the athletic director include the following:

  • Certification and/or 2 years of experience as an athleticdirector;
  • Experience in an international school setting;
  • Proven administrative skills and leadership ability;
  • Demonstrated success in recruitment and retention of, volunteers, supervisors;and officials;
  • Strongorganization and communication skills.
