Digging Deeper into World War One Project
Task: To choose and do an activity that you will enjoy and that will expand your sense of what World War One was like. To then reflect on what you learned from the activity and express it to your classmates through writing, speaking, or videoing about it.
Method:
1. FIRST CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY:
Read a World War 1 novel with a Canadian connection (suggested list on reverse).
OR
Watch a World War 1 movie with a Canadian connection (i.e. Passchendaele by Paul Gross, or the documentary film Vimy Ridge: Heaven to Hell - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaywRnWrhzI )
OR
Play this online WW1 game Over the Top, put out by the Canadian War Museum: www.warmuseum.ca/cwm/games/overtop/index_e.shtml
NOTE: Be sure to your choice is something about World War 1 that:
Ø has a Canadian connection
Ø you enjoy
Ø increases your knowledge of what this war was like
2. THEN CHOOSE A WAY TO PRESENT WHAT YOUR LEARNED FROM THE ACTIVITY:
Write a 5 paragraph essay (double spaced 2 pages or so)…
OR
Prepare an oral presentation (3 - 5 minutes)…
OR
Make a you tube video (3 - 5 minutes)…
…that reflects on how your knowledge and understanding of certain aspects of World War 1
increased through the activity that you chose to do
NOTE: To round out and give some common structure to your reflection, please:
Ø introduce and then briefly summarize the book/movie/game (introduction)
Ø explain how it increased your understanding of certain aspects of WW1 beyond what you learned in the classroom or from the text or knew already (provide examples – this will be the body/bulk of your work)
Ø what type of classmate you would recommend this book/movie/game to and why (conclusion)
