Learn more about the Bronx River, its watershed and the environment. Try activities to bring back to your students. Discuss programming ideas with other educators. Discover fantastic local resources available to you. And more!

SESSIONS:

A corps of experts will facilitate the sessions and provide technical assistance and resource materials to educators. The following two-hour sessions will be offered in the morning(9:30-11:30) and again in the afternoon ( 12:45-2:45) unless noted. All experience levels are welcome at any of the sessions, and all activities can be modified for any grade level.

Sessions include:

Bronx River Watershed Soil Study

Learn from the soil experts at the USDA Forestry service how to conduct soil studies with your students and learn about the results of the recently completed Bronx River Watershed Soil Study.

Solar Sails New York

Engaging hands-on science and engineering activities that support NYS Learning Standards and Core Curriculum, addressing specific performance indicators.Take home a free energy education kit and support materials for your classroom, center, or institution.A Solar Kit for the Classroom; created for grades 3rd -12th with a strong focus at the middle school level.

NYC water supply system

Take a journey throughNYC water systems with DEP educator Min Kan. Educators will gain insights into the construction and function of thewater systems that we rely upon on a daily basis.

Macroinvertebrates and water quality

A former NYC Math teacher and macroinvertebrate maven will introduce teachers to how to use a macroinvertebrate study with students to judge the health of the river.

Bronx River History and Map resources

Learn about how the river has been affected by humans and how the river has influenced local history in an interactive workshop that will also provide resources and guidance to help you and your student research the history of your community.

BRONX RIVER ALLIANCE

The Bronx River Alliance is a nonprofit organization that partners with the New York

City Department of Parks & Recreation to work towards the rehabilitation of the

Bronx River and its environs, coordinate the development of the Bronx River

Greenway, and act as a support and partner for over 100 other community based

organizations that share common goals for improving the river.The Alliance’s Education Program promotes the use of the watershed as an outdoor classroom, helps schools and community groups incorporate the watershed into their programs, and creates opportunities for the public to understand and appreciate the Bronx River.
