14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
To provide a safe, enjoyable and well maintained outdoor recreation environment at State Parks and Boating Access Sites. To protect the natural, cultural and historic resources within the system. To accomplish these duties providing for safety, security, maintenance, and visitor service. Also to perform administrative duties and support as required.
This position requires that the employee be able to obtain and hold a DNR Law Enforcement Commission.

Duty 1

General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 30%
Visitor Services
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Provide accurate information on park facilities and surrounding areas. Respond to emergency and critical situations. Resolve complaints from park users and employees. Perform investigation of incidents and prepare incident reports. Patrol park areas, enforce park rules and policies, issue citations and process evictions as necessary. Employee will be required to maintain First Aid and CPR certifications.

Duty 2

General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 30%
Maintenance
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Clean and maintain public restrooms and other facility buildings. Operate and perform minor maintenance on state owned trucks, tractors, mowers and other motorized equipment. Perform building and grounds maintenance using common hand and power tools. Troubleshoot and make evaluations/repairs of minor plumbing and electrical problems. An MDOT medical card is, or will be, required for this position.

Duty 3

General Summary of Duty 3 % of Time 25%
Administration
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Oversee campgrounds and day use areas as assigned. Perform safety inspections and maintain records for employee and visitor safety. Maintain records and prepare reports for park operations, including, but not limited to, camping, CRS, Recreation Passports and various types of user permits. Participate in training of fellow employees. Employee must participate in department sponsored training as required and offered. Employee must have a working knowledge of basic computer skills.

Duty 4

Fee collection
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Collect Recreation Passport fees. Register camps via CRS. Accurately account for permits and money. Perform checkouts of money and Recreation Passports, prepare bank deposits and reconcile accounts.

Initiation of minor repairs. Resolution of rule infractions. Assignment of SW4’s to cover a particular problem or use.

Major facility breakdowns or safety concerns. Situations involving deviations from normal policies and practices. Major expenditure of funds. Public correspondence representing the park. Non-routine incidents and events.
18. What kind of physical effort do you use in your position? What environmental conditions are you physically exposed to in your position? Indicate the amount of time and intensity of each activity and condition. Refer to instructions on page 2.
Moderate lifting. Possible extensive sitting, standing, driving, mowing and walking. May be required to use physical force in law enforcement details. Exposure to outdoor conditions; i.e. heat, cold, sun, dust, pollen, rain, snow, etc. May work near and around water. Will use chemicals for cleaning and maintenance purposes. May encounter unsanitary situations. Weekend and holiday work required.

The function of the work area is to provide outdoor recreation opportunities and to protect resources. This position is an integral part of the direct public contact required in providing these functions.

EDUCATION:
Knowledge and skills typically required through completion of High School.
EXPERIENCE:
Park and Recreation Ranger 6 No specific type or amount is required.
Park and Recreation Ranger 7 One year of experience in a park or recreation setting, or in the construction trades.
Park and Recreation Ranger E8 Two years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger 7.
Recognized Alternative:
§  Completion of at least 8 semester (12 term) college credits in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for one year of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.
§  Completion of at least 15 semester (22 term) college credits in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for two years of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
The ability to communicate effectively. Ability to perform basic computer functions. Willingness and ability to follow directions, policies and procedures. Be a self-starter and self-motivator, yet be able to function in a team environment. Be willing to be subjected to drug testing.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Possession of current CPR & First Aid certifications (Renewed every 1-3 years as required).
Submit to and pass a physical examination, pre-employment drug testing, and criminal history check, as well as complete a seven-week DNR training to obtain a DNR Law Enforcement commission. Required for continuance of the commission: successful completion of annual DNR Survival Tactics (ST) training, periodic law update training, random drug testing, etc.
NOTE: Civil Service approval of this position does not constitute agreement with or acceptance of the desirable qualifications for this position.
