Descendants of Samuel Cary

Generation No. 1

1. SAMUEL1 CARY. He married RUTH 18321.

Notes for SAMUEL CARY:

The 1836 Newfoundland census notes that Samuel Cary (present spelling of Kearley did not come into existence until the period 1880-1890) had a fishing boat which weighed under 15 tons, that he planted half an acre of land, that he grew 30 bushels of potatoes and that he was a member of the Episcopal Church. He had a household consisting of 3 males under age 14, 1 male age 14 - 60, 3 females under age 14, and 2 females age 14-60.

Samuel's house was directly across a cove from Richard Philpott's house, about 200 feet apart. Two of their children eventually married.

Rex Kearley's notes indicate that the surname Carey is found in England, Ireland and Guernsey. There is a place in Devon called Carey Baron, after the River Carey. In the Gaelic there are seven variants of this name, and that may account for the changes that have occurred in the surname over the past 150 years.

The name "Carey" is listed in K. Matthews, "A 'Who was Who' of Families Engaged in the Fishery and Settlement of Newfoundland 1660-1840."

Per the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador:

HATCHET HARBOUR

(pop. 1981, 75) A small fishing community, Hatchet Harbour is located on the northwestern side of Goshen's Arm in northeastern New World Island, approximately 10 km (6 mi.) east of Twillingate. According to local tradition, Joseph Kearley first settled Hatchet Harbour in 1884, coming from Salt Harbour Island to the north and building on land purchased from one Eli Pollard. The community first appeared separately in the Census n 1945, with a population of seventeen. It is sometimes referred to as part of Herring Neck.

Per Rex Kearley - Before they lived in Hatchet Harbour, Joseph and Miriam built their first house on Salt Harbour Island, at the upper end of Starve Harbour, in a place that later became known as Randell's Tickle. When Joseph and Miriam moved to Hatchet Harbour, their son Alfred took over the house before selling it to the Randell family. In 1936, however, Ned Kearley repurchased the house from the Randell family.

A Joseph Kearley was an elector and house holder in Starve Harbour in 1889, per voting lists in the Thomas Peyton Collection at PANL.

Per Rex Kearley - "There is one account of my grandfather coming back in the fall with less fish than enough to cover his expenses for that year. He had a schooner, a fairly large one called the Clementine, and Carter's trade threatened to take his schooner for the portion of the bills that he couldn't pay that summer. The story was recorded in the Twillingate Sun. The old gentleman took a few of his muzzle loading guns, went aboard the schooner and said "Come take her." They didn't. He was probably capable of shooting them anyway. The next summer he got somebody else to outfit him, made a very successful voyage and paid them all off. You are talking about a family that never grovelled . . . ."
