Hamlet—Silent Discussions

Your group will be given five topics, which you will rotate between yourselves in order to “discuss” a certain social or thematic issue that is relevant to our study of Hamlet. You should read the topic below and take ONLY TEN MINUTES to write your opinion. After ten minutes, you will rotate topics and not only respond to the new topic, but to the response of the person who had the topic before you.

This assignment will count AS AN EASY QUIZ GRADE. I am looking for NEW INNOVATIVE IDEAS and textual references. You MUST have textual support for the assertions you make. Any response that does not have textual support will NOT receive credit. Make sure your response includes a topic sentence, supporting details, concrete examples (textual evidence), and commentary.

You will be graded as a group, but each individual should write his or her name beside each response. However, if one member of the group does not contribute ideas or demonstrate an adequate understanding of the text, he or she will receive an individual grade on the assignment.

Topic: Ultimately Hamlet kills Claudius. Did he fulfill his promise to the ghost of his father by completing this act, or was his revenge ineffective? Use details from the text to support your opinion.

Topic: In the first half of the play, Hamlet seems to have the upper hand in the conflict. However, as the play progresses, the power shifts away from Hamlet. At what point does Hamlet lose control of the situation? What, if anything, could Hamlet have done to change the outcome of the events?

Topic: Did Rosencrantz and Guildenstern deserve to be executed? What was Hamlet’s reasoning behind killing them? Did Hamlet seek justice, or was this decision an act of revenge, and if it was revenge, how was Hamlet able to act so quickly when he has done very little to avenge the death of his father?

Topic: When Hamlet realizes he is dying, he says to Horatio,

If thou didst ever hold me in thy heart,

Absent thee from felicity a while,

And in this harsh world draw they breath in pain,

To tell my story. (V. ii. 339-342)

Why is it so important to Hamlet that Horatio tell the story of what has occurred to the royal family and members of the court? Are there lessons to be learned?
