The Crucible Essay Questions

Choose one topic.

1.  Choose one type of figurative language and examine Miller’s use of it in the text. Find a few examples and unpack them completely like we did when we wrote the figurative language paragraphs. Ask yourself why figurative language figures (pun intended) so strongly in the text.

2.  Reverend Hale undergoes an interesting transformation during the text. Examine how he is a dynamic character.

3.  The word “weight” is used many times throughout the play. How is the word used? What does it reveal about the character who uses it?

4.  Some characters are accused in the text because the townspeople are biased against them. Who are these characters? How are the townsfolk biased against them? What does Miller reveal or communicate about the accusers by revealing their biases?

5.  Is Abigail a dynamic or static character? Why?

Today and tomorrow you will spend time planning, thinking about, and drafting your essay. Remember the extensive thinking and writing we did about one line from the text when we examined figurative language? Go for depth in this essay. Additionally,

·  Make sure you can identify a clear thesis statement

·  Cite your quotes (and no “this shows”—name what you observe is communicated to you, the reader)

·  Use LOL

·  At the end of the paragraphs and the end of the essay, think about the purpose of what you have examined in the text. Ask yourself why what you have discussed matters.

THIS ESSAY IS DUE ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2013.

I AM USUALLY FLEXIBLE, BUT I WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE PAPERS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT.

Absent? Hand it in the day before or have someone drop it off.

Going home sick? Hand it in first.

Having tech issues? Plan for the unexpected and work using a flash drive or googledocs.

Whatever you do…make sure Mr. Sneed has that essay on Friday.
