We're listening!

Once again we are pleased to offer a free professional development day for teachers and advisers working in our schools and colleges. Based on comments from the evaluation forms last time, we have arranged speakers to cover requested topics, and have included a practical session this time. Copies of slides will be made available for making notes. Don't forget to put a request on your evaluation form if there is a topic you would like us to cover, and we will do our best to include it next time.

Progression Pathways

Most aspects of progression to university have changed in the past few years or are about to change: universities and their admissions criteria, the range of providers, and the school/college curriculum. This session will start with an overview, followed by a round table discussion and a practical group task.

The new UCAS tariff

The UCAS Tariff is changing! What will it look like, how will it be applied, and what needs to change in your school or college? This is your chance to find out, and ask any questions you may have.

Application and admissions to health and social care courses

- the key things to know about supporting students into nursing, midwifery and a range of related courses. Jane has a wealth of experience in health care and in selecting and supporting students on these courses. She has the answers for you (and even the questions you should ask!)

Getting into Medicine

Getting into medicine and otherrelated courses is often seen as a challenge, with a limited number of places, requirements varying between universities, additional tests to be taken, and the question of what to put on a personal statement. Julie will tell you how it all works at The University of Sheffield.

Accessing work experience in health and care

We know students need it, but how do they find it? Ceri Nursaw can point you in the right direction. She has 20 years' experience in higher education and is an expert in fair access and recruitment. She now leads a consultancy which has worked with several universities. She has recently acted as consultant to the Medical Schools Council.

Applying to Oxford

Myths abound about applying to Oxford, fuelled by media reports about strange admissions processes and excellent students who don't make it. Janette is the Oxford Outreach contact for this region. She will explain how applications and admissions work, and how to select, encourage and prepare students to apply.

Supporting vocational learners

The good news for vocational learners is that they are in demand from higher education, although they may not know it! It is important that students who have the ability to do well at Level 3 are made aware of higher educationfrom an early stage, encouraged to take the courses and modules that will demonstrate their ability, and are well informed about what courses to apply for and how to maximise their chances. This session will look at all these factors, with examples from a variety of courses.
