MLWS Supervisory Committee

The MLWS Supervisory Committee is responsible for guiding the student through his/her Major Project, a core requirement for completion of the MLWS Program.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic/professional support throughout the student’s program;
  • Provides critical comments on the project proposal and the final outcome;
  • Reviews academic progress on no less than a quarterly basis;
  • Recommends whether the Major Project is of acceptable standard for examination; and
  • Ensures that all LFS and FoGS procedures associated with the degree program are met.

Composition

  • The student’s Committee will consist of two co-supervisors:
  • One UBC Faculty member or instructor, responsible for the student’s program,
  • One member of the Professional community (e.g., P.Ag., P.Geo., etc.) working in a related area
  • Note: The MLWS website (mlws.landfood.ubc.ca) includes a list of potential co-supervisors. Students are recommended (but not restricted) to selecting a committee from this list.
  • Either the Director or the Academic Coordinator of the MLWS Program will serve ex officio on each student’s committee, if not a regular member

Replacements

  • Committee members on leave exceeding 2 months willbe replaced, at least for the period they are away.
  • A change in project topic or direction may require a change in Committee composition – in such cases a new committee composition form must be submitted to the MLWS Program office for approval.

Meetings

  • It is the responsibility of the UBC Co-supervisor to ensure that the supervisory committee meets at least twice over the 12-month duration of the student’s program. Keep in mind that the program runs from September 1 – August 31. The following meetings are required:
  • Meeting to review and approve Major Project proposal and timeline (first 6 months)
  • Meeting to review written and oral presentation of Major Project (last 3 months)
  • One-on-one meetings/correspondences are recommended and encouraged with the student throughout the course of the usual 12-month program to advise and monitor student progress.
