Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club - Annual Awards Policy
1. Establishment of the Annual Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club Annual Awards
1.1 The Annual Awards have been established to accord recognition to players, coaches and administrators of the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club (the “Club”) for their efforts on and off the field.
1.2 These Rules were drafted by the Committee of season 2008/2009, having regard to previous rules and unwritten conventions that had governed the Awards, as well as with consultation with coaches, current and past captains, various life members and other senior members of the Club.
1.3. The primary purpose of these Rules is to ensure that there is clarity and transparency on the way that award winners are determined, and who is ineligible to receive awards. A further purpose of these Rules is to ensure that the Awards maintain their integrity as an important part of the Club culture. Where there are competing considerations between fairness to an individual player and the integrity of an Award, these Rules will favour the integrity of the Award.
1.4 Award categories, nominees and winners shall be appointed in accordance with the provisions of this Policy.
2. Award Categories
2.1 The Committee shall determine specified Award Categories from time to time. As at the commencement of the 2008/09 season, the Committee has determined that the following specific Award Categories apply for its Annual Awards:
· Ray Saffer Award - Cricketer of the Year
· Leonard Burman Club Championship - Outstanding 1st XI Cricketer
· Michael Klinger Award - Rising Star
· Rob Lourie Award - Most Determined Cricketer
· Harry Newhouse Award - Most Dedicated Trainer
· Les Kausman Award - Most Consistent Cricketer
· Ernie Adler Award - Most Improved Cricketer
· Kurt Defris Award - Outstanding Service to the Club
· Hans Spitz Award - Best Clubman
· Shawne Rubinstein Award - Best Fieldsman
· Batting Averages Awards for each XI
· Bowling Averages Awards for each XI
· Batting & Bowling Club Aggregate Awards
· Centuries & 7-Wicket Innings Awards
· Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club Team of the Year
2.2 Additional Categories may be awarded, subject to Committee approval, for example:
· The President’s Award
· Special Achievement Awards (e.g. Milestones, Hat-tricks, Farewells)
3. Selection Criteria
3.1 The Committee shall have regard to the criteria set out in section 4 in respect of each Award.
3.2 Subject to the criteria being met in accordance with section 4, a member of the Committee may be considered for selection in any specific award category subject to the unanimous vote of the Committee.
3.3 For all discretionary awards, the Committee are encouraged to seek input from relevant people (e.g. captains, coaches etc) to assist with the decision-making process.
4. Award Criteria
4.1 The Committee shall award the following:
Ray Saffer Award – Cricketer of the Year
Background & Purpose
4.1.1 The Ray Saffer Award is one of the most important awards at the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club. Its purpose is to reward the best cricketer during the season relative to the standard of cricket played by each player (i.e. the Cricketer of the Year). That is, in theory, each player from any XI is eligible to win the Award.
Award Rules/Considerations
4.1.2 The Ray Saffer Award is awarded to the person who achieves the highest amount of votes allocated as described in paragraphs 4.1.3-4.1.6 after weighting has been taken into consideration in accordance with sections 4.1.12 – 4.1.13.
Allocation of Votes
4.1.3 At the end of each match, the captain of the particular Club team will request the captain of the opposing team to provide votes for the best player in that particular match for that particular Club team. The votes shall be allocated on a 3-2-1 basis, 3 being the highest, and 1 being the lowest.
4.1.4 In the event that the opposing captain does not, for any reason, provide the votes, the captain of the particular Club team shall allocate the votes for that match.
4.1.5 Votes are only to be allocated for a completed match. For example, if a match is not finished due to weather, votes are not allocated for that match.
Recording and Keeping of Votes
4.1.6 The captain of each Club team shall keep a record of the votes and hand them to the Club Secretary at the end of each match.
4.1.7 The Club Secretary shall be responsible for keeping the votes stored in a confidential manner until such time arises that the votes are required by the committee (or sub-committee) organising the publication and celebration of annual award winners.
Ineligible Players
4.1.8 Subject to the exceptions in paragraph 4.1.9 below, a player is ineligible to receive any votes while playing for a team in a particular match if he has not been selected in that team on his merits.
Example: If a player is playing for a lower XI but would otherwise have not been selected in that team on his merits, he cannot receive Ray Saffer Award votes in that match.
4.1.9 The following exceptions to the rule outlined in paragraph 4.1.8 apply:
4.1.9.1. If a player cannot play in a particular team due to religious reasons and therefore is selected to play in a lower XI on a different day; and
4.1.10 The Selection Committee may determine, in its discretion but in accordance with the spirit of these Rules, that in some circumstances, a player may be eligible to receive Award votes notwithstanding that he is not playing in a team in which he is selected on his merits. Such a decision needs to be made before the commencement of the particular match to which the decision relates and be communicated to the Secretary of the Club.
4.1.11 The Chairman of Selectors shall maintain a list of all players ineligible, by reason of these Rules, from receiving Award votes for a particular round and provide this list to the Club Secretary at the end of the season.
Weighting of Votes
4.1.12 For the purposes of these Rules, the “usual amount of matches” refers to, for a particular year, the amount of matches scheduled to be played by the 1st XI in their competition, not including byes. The “usual amount of matches” is to be determined in accordance with the schedule released at the beginning of the year and includes forfeits or matches not completed due to weather.
4.1.13 If a particular team in a particular year is scheduled, in its competition, to play more or less than the usual amount of matches, the Award votes for matches played by that team in that competition will be weighted proportionality by reference to the usual amount of matches. The amount of matches a particular team is scheduled to play in its competition includes forfeits or matches not completed due to weather.
Example: If the 1st XI are scheduled to play 11 matches in a season and the 5th XI are scheduled to play 13 matches, then each vote awarded to a player in a 5th XI match is weighted as 11/13th of a vote.
Role of the Selection Committee / Chairman of Selectors
4.1.14 The Chairman of Selectors, on behalf of the Selection Committee, shall, throughout the course of the season:
(a) Maintain a list of ineligible players from all matches played
(b) Communicate this list with the club secretary on an ongoing basis
(c) Determine player ineligibility for votes before each match is played
4.2 The Committee shall award the following:
Leonard Burman Club Championship - Outstanding 1st XI Cricketer
Background & Purpose
4. 2. 1 The Leonard Burman Club Championship Award is non-discretionary award given to the most Outstanding 1st XI cricketer, based on their on-field performances throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4. 2. 2 The Leonard Burman Club Championship Award is a statistical-based award given to the player who scores the highest amount of points based on statistical data, in accordance with the following rules:
· 1 run = 1 point
· Unassisted Wicket = 15 points
· Assisted Wicket = 10 points
· Catch = 5 points
· Stumping = 5 points
· Runout (direct) = 15 points
· Runout (thrower) = 10 points
· Runout (catcher) = 5 points
4.2.3 For the purpose of clause 4.2:
4.2.3.1 An unassisted wicket means a wicket taken by the bowler that is bowled, lbw, caught and bowled, or hit wicket; and
4.2.3.2 An assisted wicket means a wicket taken by the bowler that is stumped or caught.
4.3 The Committee may award the following:
Michael Klinger Award - Rising Star
Background & Purpose
4. 3. 1 The Michael Klinger Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered to be a ‘Rising Star’ of the club, based on their on-field performances throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4. 3. 2 The player must be aged 21 or under as at 1 October (i.e. the October at the beginning of the season).
4. 3.3 The player must show through his performances during the season, significant potential to play in the Club’s first XI, or at an equivalently higher level, in future seasons.
4.4 The Committee may award the following:
Rob Lourie Award – Most Determined Cricketer
Background & Purpose
4. 4. 1 The Rob Lourie Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered the most determined cricketer, based on their on-field performances, as well as their effort and conduct during training sessions, throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4.4.2 The cricketer must regularly perform at a high level during adverse circumstances (eg, the player or the team is in a difficult position).
4.4.3 The cricketer must always give 100% irrespective of the state of the game at the time.
4.5 The Committee may award the following:
Harry Newhouse Award – Most Dedicated Trainer
Background & Purpose
4. 5. 1 The Harry Newhouse Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered to have been the most dedicated trainer throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4. 5. 2 The player must attend a significantly high percentage of club training sessions, both during the season and throughout pre-season.
4. 5. 3 The player’s dedication and intensity during training sessions must be considered for this award.
4.6 The Committee may award the following:
Les Kausman Award – Most Consistent Cricketer
Background & Purpose
4. 6. 1 The Les Kausman Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered the most consistent cricketer, based on their on-field performances throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4. 6. 2 A player’s consistency in run-scoring or wicket-taking is the most dominant factor when determining this award.
4. 6. 3 A player’s consistency of effort and endeavour will also be taken into consideration.
4.7 The Committee may award the following:
Ernie Adler Award – Most Improved Cricketer
Background & Purpose
4. 7. 1 The Ernie Adler Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered the most improved cricketer, based on their performances throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4. 7. 2 A player’s on-field improvement is the most dominant factor in determining for this award.
4. 7. 3 Other relevant factors can include a player’s elevation to higher XI’s and their improved skill ability at training, as well as their improvement from the previous season or during the course of the season.
4.8 The Committee may award the following:
Kurt Defris Award – Outstanding Service to the Club
Background & Purpose
4. 8. 1 The Kurt Defris Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered to have given outstanding service to the club, based on their contribution throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4. 8. 2 This Award is typically bestowed upon a Committee member, but may be awarded to any other person if/where the Committee deems it appropriate.
4. 8. 3 Consideration will be given to persons who have made major/significant contributions to the club off the field, and/or whose contributions have involved a higher level of difficulty or effort than that which is typically offered or expected of a person in that position.
4.9 The Committee may award the following:
Hans Spitz Award – Best Clubman
Background & Purpose
4. 9. 1 The Hans Spitz Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered the best clubman throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4. 9. 1 This Award is typically bestowed upon a non-Committee member, but may be awarded to a Committee member if/where the Committee deems it to be appropriate in clear and compelling circumstances.
4. 9. 2 Consideration will be given to a person’s contribution to the club in terms of:
(a) on-field and off-field conduct at the club;
(b) willingness and ability to enhance the social culture and fabric of the club; and
(c) assistance/input provided for club functions, events or other tasks.
4.10 The Committee may award the following:
Shawne Rubinstein Award – Best Fieldsman
Background & Purpose
4.10.1 The Shawne Rubinstein Award is a discretionary award given to the person considered the best fieldsman, based on their on-field performances throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4.10.2 The number and quality of catches, run outs or stumpings a person completes in the season.
4.10.3 Runs saved through general ground fielding efforts.
4.11 The Committee shall award the following:
Batting Averages Awards
Background & Purpose
4.11.1 The Batting Averages Awards are non-discretionary awards given to the best performing batsman – that is, the batsman with the highest average - in each of the Club’s teams, based on their on-field performances throughout the season.
Award Rules/Considerations
4.11.2 To qualify for these awards, a player must have:
(a) Made a minimum number of 200 runs throughout the season in that particular XI; and
(b) Played a minimum number of 4 games in that particular XI.
4.12 The Committee shall award the following:
