To work within the QMI Biopharma technology transfer team to facilitate the commercialisation of technologies derived from QMUL research in Barts and the London, Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry (and other QMUL research areas as appropriate), engaging in IP discovery and protection, technology licensing and new spinout company formation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
The key responsibilities of the post holder will be to work closely with other members of Queen Mary Innovation Ltd to contribute effectively to the delivery of (i) QMI’s faculty delivery plan for the School of Medicine and Dentistry and (ii) the QMI Business Plan.
Specifically to:
1.Establish productive relationships with the College’s academic and research community to stimulate awareness of intellectual property issues and commercial opportunities, and to encourage an innovative and entrepreneurial culture within the College;
2.Contribute to the process of auditing academic departments to identify College intellectual property with potential for commercial development;
3. Advise academics on, agree and execute, the best mode of protection for College intellectual property;
4. Assess the commercial potential of College intellectual property, and identify appropriate routes to exploitation;
5. Appropriately market College intellectual property to identify and engage commercial exploitation partners / investors;
6. Assist in technology licensing and new venture formation processes; in particular structuring, negotiating and closing deals;
7. Communicate regularly and effectively with other members of Queen Mary Innovation Ltd, including regular meetings with Head of Technology Transfer Biopharma, to ensure effective management of College intellectual property;
8.Engage, as required, with members of the Research Development office in securing translational funding for projects with commercial potential.
9. Carry out such other duties relevant to the post holder’s experience as requested by the Head of Technology Transfer Biopharma.

Knowledge of and possible experience of UK technology transfer practices. Demonstrable delivery of outputs in higher education and/or industry and possibly commercial outputs.
Freedom to Act & Decision Making (depth of control, supervision received, use of judgement & initiative, analytical ability)
Analyse intellectual property (IP) to identify the best mode of protection. Make recommendations for the protection of IP to the Head of Technology Transfer Biopharma and to appropriate academic staff, employing in-house standardised evaluation and due diligence processes.
Make recommendations for the exploitation of College IP to the Head of Technology Transfer Biopharma, and lead the implementation of these recommendations once agreed.
Identify and engage suitable commercial exploitation partners and investors.
Engage in the structuring, negotiation and closing of licensing deals and new venture formation.
Liaise with colleagues in the Biopharma Technology Transfer Team more broadly, other senior managers within Queen Mary Innovation Ltd and the College to contribute to the development of bestpractice in technology transfer.

The postholder will beresponsible for contributing to the delivery of a range of deliverables including technology disclosures, appropriate protection of College intellectual property, license and investment outputs and new venture formation.

The post holderwill not be required to line manage staff.
