ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN FRENCH
The examination will consist of three written papers of three hours’ duration and of one hundred marks each and a Viva-Voce of hundred marks.
PAPER I: GRAMMAR AND TRANSLATION
MAXIMUM MARKS: 100 TIME ALLOWED: 3 HOURS
PASS MARKS: 35
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER- SETTER
All the questions should be strictly within the scope of the prescribed book and modeled as far as possible, on the patterns followed in it.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATE
Marks will be awarded only for grammatically correct and coherent expression; word-limit wherever indicated, must be adhered to.
All the questions and answers must be in French.
DETAILED SYLLABUS
This paper will be based on the book CONNEXIONS – III and will consist of five sections viz. A, B, C, D and E as follows:
SECTION A: APPLIED GRAMMAR
Questions on applied grammar designed in such a manner as to cover most of the major grammatical patterns introduced in the prescribed book 30 marks
SECTION B: COMPOSITION/INFORMAL LETTER
- Composition
A composition of 100-150 words on a general theme or subject covered in the text book. The candidate will be asked to write on any one of the given three topics.
- Informal letter
Informal letter of 100-150 words to family and friends (Choice may be given)
Important Note: The candidate will be asked to attempt either the composition or the informal letter. 20 marks
SECTION C: COMPREHENSION
Comprehension of an unseen passage. 30 marks
SECTION D
Translation from French to English. 10 marks
SECTION E
Translation from English to French. 10 marks
NOTE: Use of French-English and English-French dictionaries is allowed in the examination.

This paper shall consist of only one section consisting of six questions.

SECTION A
Drama prescribed – La femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol.
A critical study of this play under the following heads:
1. Major themes
2. Major characters
3. Resume
Six questions will be asked out of which the candidate will be asked to attempt any four. The answer shall be of 300 words. 25x4=100
PAPER III : HISTORY OF FRENCH LITERATURE
MAXIMUM MARKS: 100 TIME ALLOWED: 3 HOURS
PASS MARKS: 35

This paper shall consist of two sections viz. Section A and Section B.

DETAILED SYLLABUS
The following Literary Movements are prescribed:
- Le Surréalisme
- L’Existentialisme
- Le Nouveau Roman
- Le Nouveau Théâtre
SECTION A
This section shall consist of objective type questions based on the above mentioned topics (the questions may be in the form of multiple choice questions or fill in the blanks). There shall be 25 questions in all out of which the candidate will be required to attempt any 20, each carrying 2 marks. 2x20=40
SECTION B
This section shall consist of essay type questions based on the above mentioned topics. The candidate will be asked to attempt any three questions out of the given five each carrying 20 marks. 20x3=60

4. Discussion on a topic given by the examiner
