Student Policies & Procedures

General Information:

Expressions Pottery Workshop students may use the studio 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week EXCEPT during other class times & member meetings or nights.

Class demonstrations start on time. Students are expected to be attentive during lectures. This includes being respectful of the other student’s & the teacher’s need for quiet.

Each student will have a space to store their belongings and up to 25 pounds of clay.

Please label all clay, tools, belongings, & works in progress with your name.

Always sign each pot with your name & the term code before leaving on shelves for bisque firing. Please use a pencil (not a needle tool) for a boldlegible signature.

Never touch other people’s pieces.

Expressions Pottery Workshop is a teaching studio. Our main educational goal is to introduce pottery techniques to beginner & intermediate students. We are NOT a “production studio” (therefore, limitations are imposed on Expressions Pottery Workshop members (through weight/space policies) and students (through time/weight/space policies)).

Each student’s bisque weight is limited to 35 lbs. per term. For each pound in excess students will be charged $7.50 per pound. All payments must be made before student registers for or is placed on the wait list for the next term.

Bisque ware from a previous class brought back into the studio to glaze & fire must be checked in by the teacher. There will be a charge of $1/lb (bisque weight) for all pottery brought back into the studio after the term in which it was made.

NO throwing or saving until the older pieces are glazed.

Each student will be allotted a space on the bisque shelves which will be labeled with name & signature.

At the end of each class term, all student tools, clay, pots & materials must be removed from the studio. Things left in the studio will be discarded.

Student Policies & Procedures(continued)

Students may not sell pottery in the Gallery or take orders to sell pottery through Expressions. These are member privileges.

Friends may come to Expressions to visit EXCEPT during class time (there are day and night classes) and when Expressions closes the studio for studio business. They may not work with Expressions equipment, tools, clay, etc.

No children, pets, or smoking in the studio are allowed.

Considerations regarding size, shape, glaze, mix in kiln, placement in kiln, etc., makes it impossible for the studio to guarantee that any piece will be fired by any specific deadline. Please plan accordingly.

The Gallery door should remain locked at all times. Theft has occurred as people can come in without us being aware. The door combination is changed every term & will be supplied by your teacher at the first class.

Student clay policies are as follows:

Clay costs:

  • $20 for 25# of new clay

Students will recycle their own clay including trimmings and slurry. Please see clay recycling handout.

All production will be done in the studio from clay purchased from Expressions. No pieces hand built or thrown outside of the studio will be fired at Expressions. Please do not take Expressions clay homeexcept for between term “storage.”

Bat usage will be limited to 8 bats at any given time.

Marking Pots for Firing:

All greenware must be labeled with the current term code. No greenware without a term code will be bisque fired.

Student Policies & Procedures(continued)

Class Schedule:

Large pieces should be thrown/built before the end of the 5th class.

No wetware production (thrown or hand built) after the 7th (6th Summer Term) class.

The 8th (7th Summer Term) class is the last night for trimming.

All greenware must be placed (uncovered) on ‘to be bisqued’ shelves by the end of the 8th (7th Summer Term) class.

When a student has a maximum of 8 pieces of bisque pottery, OR when their allotted space is full, the student is required to glaze ALL of their pieces before they can throw or build anything new.

Weeks 9 & 10 (8 and 9 for Summer Term) are the last weeks for glazing. Bisque left on the students’ bisque retrieval shelf after the final night may be taken home for glazing next term. If left at the studio it will be discarded.

Students may not return to the studio after the last night (week 10) to glaze any pieces.

Please leave the studio at least as clean as it was when you arrived, including:

Turn the wheel off!

Clean your wheel, inside & out & any surrounding splashes you caused.

Mop all around your wheel after using. Do not sweep!

Re-wedge all clay used & return it to your bag.

Leave wedging plasterboards clean. Never use anything sharper than a plastic spatula on the plasterboards. Plaster in clay is disastrous!

If you are the last to leave the studio, please turn off all lights, wheels, radio, & close and lock the windows. Turn the heat or air-conditioning down/up to indicated levels.

Close thedoorbetweenthewheelroomandthegallery

LOCK all of the doors.

Expressions land line phone usage:

No long distance phone calls.

Keep local calls short.

If you answer the phone & it is for a member or another student who is not present, take a message or have them call back. DO NOT give out student or member phone numbers.

Cell phones: Talk quietly & away from others.
