Yooralla provides specialist services to schools inproviding flexible and tailored supports for childrenwith additional needs.

Our three key school services are:

  • Specialist support for individual students orgroups. This includes occupational therapy,physiotherapy, speech pathology and specialistteaching.
  • Education and training workshops for schoolstaff to enhance the participation and inclusionof all students in schools
  • Education Support Officers (ESOs)

Our staff are trained allied health and educationspecialists, providing a holistic approach tosupporting the needs of every student.

We provide support at a ‘whole of school’ level,from tailored support for individual students andgroups, to the professional development andmentoring of teaching staff. This enables yourschool to better meet the needs of children withadditional learning needs and foster a culture ofinclusion and respect.

Therapy

Yooralla can provide occupational, physical andspeech therapists to support individual students toachieve their goals.

Occupational therapists can support students with:

  • handwriting, visual processing anddevelopment of fine motor skills
  • developing independence to complete dailytasks such as self care and toileting
  • education, support and practical strategies toenhance participation if sensory processingdifficulties are impacting on tasks and engagement
  • attention and concentration in the classroom
  • groups to develop social skills, fine motor skillsand sensory motor skills
  • accessibility through environment modifications,equipment prescription and assistive technology advice
  • transition assistance between grades, schoolsand post-school options.

Physiotherapists can support students with:

  • equipment prescription (e.g. seating,wheelchairs)
  • access to the school environment and physicaleducation
  • developing independent mobility and grossmotor skills
  • manual handling.

Speech pathologists can support students with:

  • literacy
  • speech and language development
  • fluency and voice disorders
  • social skills
  • prescription of high and low techcommunication systems/devices
  • mealtime support (e.g. swallowing difficultieseating and drinking skills, specialisedequipment, saliva control)
  • developing .Augmentative and AssistiveCommunication systems
  • support for functional communication in theclassroom.

Education specialists

Specialist teachers can support:

  • positive behavior approaches
  • transition support between year levels
  • additional strategies to engage children inclassroom learning activities
  • developing social skills.

Education Support Officers can provide additionalsupport to teachers in the classroom and personalsupport to students.

Workshops and programs for schools

Yooralla provides group workshops, mentoring and coaching to staff in schools. All workshops aredelivered by professionally trained Yooralla staff and are available in modified formats for both primaryand secondary schools. Yooralla also facilitates a range of learning circles and local networks to provideadditional and ongoing support.

  • Disability awareness:understanding disability and how to include students with additional needs.
  • Communicationstrategies: supporting staff working with children with communication difficulties.
  • Personal care: including mealtime assistance, dressing and toilet support.
  • Accessibility:ensuring an accessible environment, understanding technology and equipment to support the inclusion of children with disability andadditional needs.
  • Manual handling:designed for staff working with children with physical disability.
  • Sensory processing:providing explanation for why some children do not easily engage inlearning and strategies to meet the sensory needs of students so theycan effectively engage in the classroom and curriculum.
  • Behaviour support:positive strategies for engaging students in learning and interactions.
  • Effective transition:supporting children with additional needs to transition, eg kinder to school,moving through primary school and on to secondary school.
  • Child aware:supporting staff to identify and respond to risk factors and signs of child abuse, neglect and deprivation of liberty in children with disability.
  • Parent sessions:tailored to build family capacity to support their child’s schooling, eg earlyliteracy, sleep well-learn well.
