The Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in Le Sentier, Valee de Joux in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre. After 175 years it is still one of the most important manufacturers of ebauches (raw movements), and has supplied mechanisms to almost all the notable producers of luxury watches, including VacheronConstantin and Patek Philippe.
Merging with the Alsatian watch factory of Edmond Jaeger in 1925, the name Jaeger LeCoultre soon appeared on wristwatch dials. They are a watch collector’s watch and rank as investment-grade timepieces.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s vintage timepiece from the firm, a 14kt Solid Yellow Gold Tank form model that dates to the late 1930s and is in excellent condition.
Triple-signed for LeCoultre, it measures 36mm end to end and 20mm in width (21.5mm with winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-3/8 inches long by ¾ of an inch wide, not including the crown. My watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, manual wind LeCoultre(VXN) mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The ivory color, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – professionally restored to its correct status. It features a checkered 60 minute outer track border, raised gold Roman numerals and hour markers, original gold metal Baton-style hands and separate square seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Signed LeCoultre below the 12 and Swiss at the base of the dial.P>The solid glass crystal is in mint condition, removed in a couple of photos to minimize glare. The LeCoultre-signed, two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent PLUS condition – a classic Tank design with faceted hooded lugs - very nice. The matching yellow gold finished winding crown, unmarked (correct for late 1930s), is in excellent condition, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in uexcellent</ushape, free of any wear or engravings. Inside I find an original and high-grade mechanism signed LeCoultre Co., Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels, VXN with serial number #236,924, dating it to the very late 1930s. The inside case lid is stamped CASED & TIMED IN U.S.A BY LECOULTRE – 14 KARAT GOLD with case number below.
This watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new and high quality 16mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather band with matching color buckle so you’re all set. Much like IWC or Omega, wearing a LeCoultre watch identifies you as someone who appreciates fine Swiss watches but doesn’t go for the biggest, trendiest name on the market. I think that history, quality and design always trumps what’s merely fashionable – what about you?p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc= Founded by Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer in New York City, the Wittnauer Watch Company.became an official business in 1880, when the brand was “officially” introduced. Albert, along with his brother Louis (and later Emile) imported complete watches or just mechanisms from its Geneva, Switzerland factory. In 1889 the company ran its very first advertisement. Appearing in the twentieth anniversary issue of the Jewelers’ Weekly, the ad notes that the company sold both “plain and complicated” watches, suggesting that it was a source for chronographs and repeating watches.
By the 20th century they were firmly established as providing watches, chronometers and military timing devices to the military, famed early explorers and the general public, and are on record for producing the first waterproof watch called the “All Proof” in 1918. Long associated with the Longines Watch Co. via a US partnership the firm is now owned by Bulova, once a great competitor.
I am happy to offer for sale the following men’s timepiece from Wittnauer, an early 1950s model with fancy hour markers and genuine diamond at the 12. This is an Aristocrat 2134 model and it is set within a three-piece stainless steel case that’s in excellent, clean condition.
Triple-signed, it measures 38.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 32mm in width (34mm with crown). This works out to be 1-1/2 inches long by 1-1/4 inches wide, not including the winder. It has been fully servicedprior to auction and its high quality 17 jewel, manual wind Wittnauer Swiss mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The champagne color, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition and features a perfect patina of age. Note the “Sunburst” (guilloche) center dial, very nice! Other features include rhodium finished applied silver hour markers, original silver steel Dauphine-style hands, a genuine diamond set into the 12 marker and a recessed sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ silver steel seconds hand. Signed WITTNAUER below the 12 and SHOCK GUARD above the seconds dial.p>The gently domed hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition and is a new old stock replacement. The Wittnauersigned, stepped bezel case is Stainless Steel and in excellent condition – a few small, light scratches visible in my macro photos but hard to see when you have the watch in your hand. The winding crown, unmarked, is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent shape with no wear or personal engravings, stamped Stainless Steel/b>. To access the mechanism you unscrew the separate ring and then lift out the lid, revealing a very clean and original mechanism. It is signed Wittnauer Watch Co. Inc., Seventeen 17 Jewels, [Caliber] 10SB, Swiss – AXA. The inside case lid is signed Wittnauer - New York, Geneva, Montreal – Star W.C. Co., Stainless Steel [Model] 2134-P with case number below.
This cleaned, oiled and regulated beauty winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new & high quality 18mm deBeer Paris hand crafted lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle so you’re all set. If you like Midcentury Modern design I think you’ll be very pleased with showing this watch off on your wrist.p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc= Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the “Long Meadows” (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the “big boys” of the Swiss watch making profession including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s 14kt Solid Yellow Gold Tank form model that dates to ca 1943. This triple-signed model is in excellent condition both inside and out, complete with a Ruby Set</buntouched and original rose gold dial. While diamond dial vintage Longines watches appear for sale fairly often ruby dial examples do not (excluding ladies cocktail) – this is my first in almost 15 years of selling on eBay.
This “scoop” lug watch measures 32mm lug tip to lug tip and 21.5mm in width (23.5mm with unmarked winding crown). This works out to be 1-1/4 inches in total length by 7/8 of an inch wide, not including the crown. Although a men’s watch when first sold, its smaller, 3/4 size makes it ideal for the gent who prefers a smaller watch or perfect for a woman to wear. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind Longines 8LN caliber mechanism, fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original rose gold color, enamel finished dial is in excellent shape – a couple specks of age but guaranteed to be untouched since new. Features include a 60 minute outer track border, raised gold hour markers, red rubies at the 12 position (baguette) and 3 and 9 positions (circular), original gold metal Baton-style hands and a square sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ original gold seconds hand. Signed LONGINES below the 12 ruby and SWISS at the base of the dial.p>The original “peaked” solid glass crystal is inexcellent condition with no flaws. The two-piece, square form case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent shape. Note the “swooping” concave lugs, in pristine shape. The matching gold finished winding crown (unmarked but correct for the early and mid 1940s) is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the 14k solid yellow gold back lid is in excellentPLUS condition – stamped 14K at one edge (case maker initials are K&L). Inside I find a clean and fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 8LN, LXW with serial number 6,627,635 – dating the watch to ca 1943 as per available production records. The inside case is stamped CASED & TIMED IN USA BY LONGINES – 14K with case numberbelow.
This fine watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 16mm black deBeer Paris hand crafted lizard grain strap with matching color buckle. All in all an excellent RUBY dial late Art Deco dress model that is ready to be worn and enjoyed – it’s also a sound investment as they’re not making them like this anymore.<p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
