”Crawford’s Crew” of 5th graders- 2017-2018

ACADEMIC SUBJECTS:

Theology: We continued learning how we are made in God’s image this week in class. We began talking about the Fall from Grace and the effects of Original Sin. Today students were given a raw egg to take care of and keep safe. They realized it was a lot of work to care for the egg. We talked about how we need to be careful because they are fragile just like us. We will hold more discussion Monday about how we each are a precious gift from God and we need to take care of each other.

Reading: We finished part 1 of Wonder, which was told from August’s point of view. It ended with some unkind things being said from Auggie’s “friend” and the students were saddened and frustrated by this. It led into a nice discussion about kindness.

Science: Ms. Matyas came in this week and led a STEM activity on making a grabber to pick up marshmallows. I took several pictures and will work on uploading them to the picture section of my web page. We also began “flying” from station to station to learn more about the different ecosystems in our world.

Math: We have been working on topic 1 the past couple of weeks on place value. We will test over Topic 1 next week Thursday and start Topic 2 on adding and subtracting decimals. We also held our first math stations in which students did different activities dealing with place value.

Social Studies: We have finished chapter 1 on geography of the United States. The test over this chapter will be Wednesday and all students were given a study guide to help prepare for the test. I will also place this study guide on my web page. The students have eagerly been working on their own physical maps of the U.S. I will take pictures of the finished products and also place in the picture gallery on my web page. We will also display these in the hallway if you get a chance to stop by and look at each project.

ELA: Students have been writing their stories on what they didn’t do over summer vacation that they really wanted to do! I gave my example of what I didn’t do over summer vacation that I really wanted to do….see a bear in Tennessee. They have a good start on the rough drafts. We will be editing these and writing their final drafts next week. I do have a couple of students that asked if they could type their papers; and they may type them if they wish.

5th grade happenings:

5th graders will attend Bible Study on Thursday, September 21st. The topic is Morning Offering from Dr. Scott Hahn’s book Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots (Doubleday, 2009). We would love to have parents attend if it works in their schedule.

Many of our students read at Mass this past Wednesday and did a super job! Our next Mass in which the students will read is Wednesday, September 20th. Please join us if your schedule allows.

NWEA MAP testing begins next week. We will be taking the science MAP on Monday and the math MAP on Tuesday.

Does your child play a sport? Do they participate in plays? Do they have upcoming recitals? I would really like to try to attend if it works in my schedule. Please let me know of any upcoming dates so I can plan ahead. Thanks!

Each day we will fill out our planners. I will initial so you know I’ve seen the planner and will add to it if needed. Please sign or initial also so I know you also have seen the planner. Thank you!

I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend!
