Job Title:Head of Development

Reporting to:Head of Marketing and Audience Development

Location:Shakespeare Centre

Job Purpose:

This is an exceptionally exciting time to join the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and take a lead role in the development of its fundraising. The Head of Development will oversee our fundraising strategy, develop new income streams from individual donors, take the lead on our capital campaigns and special projects. You willdeliver the external funding targets for Shakespeare Week, our campaign to give every primary schoolchild in the UK an inspiring first encounter with Shakespeare, and lead our £2.5m capital fundraising campaign for reimagining Shakespeare’s New Place, our major project for 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016.

This is a management role within the Marketing and Audience Development Department which was created in 2012 to bring together all communications and customer/supporter development plans ensuring all activity is joined up across marketing, fundraising, events and communications.

Dimensions:

a)To review, develop and implement the Trust’s five year fundraising strategy.

b)To lead on developing our individual giving programme growing annual unrestricted donations to at least £250,000 per year by 2016.

c)To take a lead role on the development of customer and supporter programmes that enable the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to convert a proportion of the 800,000 visitors and course attendees who come to Stratford each year to become donors.

d)To lead the strategy for our capital and project campaigns, working with the Head of Marketing & Audience Development, the Senior Team and external specialists on their successful implementation.

e)To keep expenditure within the following limits: 4:1forrevenue fundraising income and 8:1 of capital fundraising income.

f)Staff Numbers –To manage the Development Officer and grow the department as required.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level and/or with relevant professional qualifications or demonstrable relevant experience (eg, Member of Institute of Fundraising)

Experience

  • Significant experience of at least three of these areas of fundraising:Legacy programmes; regular giving programmes; low and mid level individual giving; major donors; grants especially Heritage Lottery Fund and/or Arts Council; trusts and foundations; international fundraising especially raising funds in America; CRM/database and relationship fundraising; capital appeals; fundraising for heritage or arts.
  • Experience of budget and people management

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong inter-personal skills with clear personal and professional credibility necessary to represent the Trust internally and externally at a senior level
  • Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills
  • Able to develop a compelling case for support
  • Able to adapt style and content to meet needs of different funders and stakeholders
  • Able to build individual giving programmes from a low base or from scratch
  • An understanding of the legal requirements relating to charitable fundraising (including the Charities Act, Data Protection Act and the Institute of Fundraising’s Code of Fundraising Practice etc)
  • Good with numbers: financials and spreadsheets

Key responsibilities

The Head of Development’s priority will be to develop capacity within the Trust for fundraising and oversee major project and capital campaigns working with external companies as appropriate. This means:

  • Creating a positive culture for raising funds with all internal stakeholders from Trustees to visitor reception teams and volunteers.
  • Reviewing and implementing our five year fundraising strategy and developing annual plans to meet yearly and longer term targets working with the Head of Marketing and Audience Development
  • Developing our case for support of the Trust’s work in general and for specific campaigns and appeals
  • Devising systems using the new CRM/Ticketing system for developing support from our large bases of visitors (to the houses, courses, collections and online) as well as from the community including from business.
  • Working with the finance department and others to ensure that all donations are managed, reported and monitored appropriately
  • Developing our legacy programme
  • Managing the development of a programme for Major Donors working with an external specialist
  • Overseeingidentified project and capital campaigns working with external agencies to augment capacity as required
  • Ensuring that all income developing activities comply with legislation affecting charitable giving and any other compliance issues
  • Establishing effective systems for the management of fundraising and oversee accurate gift recording and stewardship of all gifts and ensure all commitments to donors are honoured

General Duties

  • Acting as anambassador and advocate for the Trust’s work at appropriate external meetings and on appropriate bodies
  • Working with the Marketing and Audience Development Team and others to identify opportunities for raising funds to support both the Trust’s ongoing activities and special projects
  • To develop and maintain knowledge of the Trust and its activities
  • To comply with the Trust’s policies and procedures
  • To complete any other duties that might be reasonably required by the Director from time to time

Implement the 5 year strategy forfundraising to align with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trusts 5 year strategic plan. / Grow revenue funding from c. £100-150,000 per year to over £250,000 per year over this period and to deliver the funding requirements for the capital and project campaigns.
Identify key potential funders in the private sector in the UK and overseas and develop relationships with them and the Trust working with external agencies as required / Strong relationships with key donors. Funding secured. Prospects moved through cultivation process.
Develop a donor base of individual supporters of the Trust. / A strong friends or membership scheme delivering at least £100,000 of annual revenue by 2016. Implement high/midrange giving programmes.
Working with other managers to identify core programme areas that are suitable for fundraising and implement a strategy to secure funding for these areas. / More of our programme work funded in this way leading to a greater net gain across other activity. The ability to expand our programmes offer as more funding is secured.
Creation of a set of compelling fundraising offers to engage our visitors, donors, website users and other audiences. / Increased income. More donors at all levels.
Ensure that all donors are stewarded well. / Donors stay with us for the long term – strong repeat donations and renewals.
