NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOME BUILDERS

STUEDNT CHAPTER

PREAMBLE

We the charter members of the National Association of Home Builders Student Chapter at Iowa State University do hereby establish and adopt the following constitution.

ARTICLE I – NAME

The name of this organization shall be the Iowa State University National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Chapter.

ARTICLE II – PURPOSE AND GOALS

Section One: Goal and Objectives:

The goals of the chapter are to develop and support an interest in residential construction and development. The student chapter is associated with the Ames Home Builders Association (AHBA) as well as the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

The objectives used to accomplish this goal shall be to:

·  Promote communication and networking between student members and contractor members

·  Unite and promote fellowship between student members and the professional societies that serve the residential industry

·  Familiarize students, faculty and administration with the professional charter and economic impact of the residential construction industry.

·  To promote and emphasize professional and social aspects of the student organization.

·  To acquaint the students with the new trends and ideas in the residential construction industry that he/she may be better prepared for his/her future work.

Section Two: University Regulations

The National Association of Home Builders abides by and supports established Iowa State University policies, State and Federal Laws.

ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP

Section One: Eligibility

Membership shall be open to all enrolled students at Iowa State University. This organization does not discriminate in the selection of the members or appointments when discrimination is defined as denying individuals membership or appointment on the basis of a person’s race, color, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, marital status, disability, status as a U.S. Veteran, or place of residence.

Section Two: Active Membership

To attain active membership, a member must pay dues as described in Article IV of this document, attend one (1) Student Chapter meeting and two (2) student organization events (i.e. social, community service, field trips, etc.)

Section Three: Renewal

Membership shall be renewed at the beginning of each Fall semester with the payment of dues, as described in Article IV of this document.

Section Five: Rights of Members

·  Members shall have all voting privileges and shall be eligible for appointment to an officer position.

·  All members shall conduct themselves in a proper manner when involved in chapter functions, both on and off campus.

·  Any member may drop from the chapter at any-time.

·  A member may be removed from the chapter for any action detrimental to the charter or name of the student chapter.

·  Removal of the member will be by a recommendation by the cabinet and a secret vote of the chapter, two-thirds majority vote ruling. A member must be notified one week prior to voting on the recommendation of his removal and may appeal any such recommendation.

Section Six: Minimum Requirements

This chapter must consist of at least six (6) currently enrolled, active student members. Non-students will be allowed to participate in any student organization activity, but will not be a voting member, or an elected or appointed officer of this organization. A non-student is someone who is not currently enrolled at Iowa State University for the Fall or Spring Semester.

ARTICLE IV – DUES

Section One: Establishment

Dues are established by the Executive Committee at the beginning of each Fall semester by a 75% affirmative vote.

Section Two: Payment

Dues shall be paid to the Treasurer for the fiscal year of July 1 to June 30 and shall not exceed $30 for two (2) semesters.

Section Three: Non-Refundable

Dues paid by members are non-refundable if the student decides to drop or is removed from the student chapter as described in Article III, Section Five of this document.

ARTICLE V – OFFICERS

Section One: Minimum Requirements

As a minimum this organization must be represented by a President and a Treasurer. At the discretion of the Executive Cabinet, additional positions may be added or combined. The minimum expectations of each office are outlined in Section Three.

Section Two: Elections

Election of officers will require a majority vote from the general membership, If a candidate fails to receive a majority vote, a run-off election will be held with the top two (2) candidates that received the most votes. Officers of this organization must meet the following requirements:

1. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) as stated below and meet that minimum cumulative GPA in the semester immediately prior to the election/appointment, the semester of election/appointment and semesters during the term of office. For undergraduate students, the minimum GPA is 2.00. In order for this provision to be met, at least six hours (half-time credits) must have been taken for the semester under consideration.

2.  Be in good standing with the university and enrolled: at least half time (six or more credit hours), if an undergraduate student (unless fewer credits are required to graduate in the spring and fall semesters) during the term of office, and at least half time (four or more credits), if a graduate level student (unless fewer credits are required in the final stages of their degree as defined by the Continuous Registration Requirement) during their term of office.

3.  Be ineligible to hold an office should the student fail to maintain the requirements as prescribed in (a) and (b).

4.  Eligibility of President: To run for the office of President the following criteria must be met:

·  Have been an active member, as described in Article III of this document, of the student chapter for at least 2 full, concurrent semesters prior to the members’ term as President.

·  In an event no one meeting the above qualifications is interested; the position will be open to the general membership.

Section Three: Term of Office

The term of office will be one full year, starting April of the election year. In the event that a term of office must be broken, another election will be held to fill the open position for the remainder of the existing term. The election process will be followed as outlined in Section Two above or any amendment to it.

Section Four: Duties of Officers

President

·  Preside over all meetings

·  Represent organization on campus, including councils of organizations (i.e. ESC presidents meetings)

·  Maintain communication with the student chapter advisor, AHBA and NAHB as required.

·  Maintain communication with the CCEE department and update them accordingly for the proper documents and marketing materials.

·  Line-up all speakers at monthly chapter meetings.

·  Send e-mail to all student members at most 5 days prior to any student chapter activity date (i.e. monthly meetings, socials, community service, etc.)

Vice-President

·  Preside over all meetings in the absence of the President.

·  Schedule meetings/events with the appropriate University offices.

·  Assist in coordination of logistics behind all student chapter activities.

·  Keep records of all members in attendance at monthly meetings and student organization events.

·  Update the NAHB Event Calendar via Google Calendar.

·  Maintain the membership directory

Secretary

·  Keep all records of the Executive Cabinet meetings.

·  Keep minutes of all Student Chapter Monthly meetings.

·  Create and print agendas for each monthly chapter meeting.

·  Design and post fliers for each monthly meeting.

·  Update the NAHB website with event information and pictures.

·  Update the online photo album with photos of all student chapter events and meetings.

Treasurer

·  Conduct chapter financial transactions

·  Maintain accurate records of organization transactions (i.e. ledgers, statements)

·  Collect membership dues as set forth by the Cabinet each year

·  Solicit any additional funding if needed from Student Government or council of organizations (i.e. ESC Allocations)

·  Order pizza and pop for monthly Chapter meetings.

Events Director

·  Organize all student chapter social and community service events.

·  Organize any field trips to local jobsites or other places of interest.

·  Coordinate events schedule with events schedule of other closely related student chapters (i.e. AGC, DBIA, MCA, NECA, etc.)

·  Track attendance of student members at all scheduled events.

Section Five: Officer Resignation

Officers are requested to give one month notice to the chapter prior to the effective date of resignation so that a replacement may be elected.

Section Six: Removal of Officers

Any Officer may be removed from office for the following:

·  Neglect of duty

·  Incompetence

·  Any act detrimental to the character of the chapter; by a petition signed by 30% of the membership being placed in the hands of the executive committee stating reasons for such action. The petition shall be reviewed by the executive committee who shall decide if enough evidence has been presented to merit the charge of the petition. Then, the action may be placed before the executive committee for a vote. A secret ballot of two-thirds majority vote is sufficient to remove an officer from his/her position.

ARTICLE VI – EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Section 1: Composition

The executive committee shall be composed of the Officers of the chapter and Advisor.

Section 2: Purpose

The executive committee shall direct, control and administer affairs of the student chapter. It shall carry out policies and instruction of the student chapter adopted by any duly called meeting and shall act for and on behalf of this chapter in all matters within its jurisdiction.

Section 3: Meetings

Executive Committee meetings shall be held the Sunday prior to the monthly meeting.

Section 4: Vacancies

Any vacancies occurring during the year may be filled by a special election at time of vacancy.

SECTION VII – ADVISER(S)

Section One: Method of Election

A meeting between the executive council and the faculty will take place to agree upon an Advisor for the chapter.

Section Two: Dates of Appointment

Selection of an advisor will be dine once and continue through the tenure at Iowa State unless the Adviser resigns his/her position due to conflicts.

Section Three: Duties

The Advisor must maintain communication and meet with the officer(s) regularly, must be aware of and approve financial expenditures and ensure that the student chapter is operating in conformity with the standards set forth by Iowa State University and the Students Activity Center.

ARTICLE VIII – FINANCES

Section One - All transactions through this organization shall be handled by the organization treasurer in accordance with the below statement. In the event that this organization is to dissolve all current funds will be used to pay outstanding debts and then turned over to the Iowa State University Construction Engineering Department.

“All monies belonging to this organization shall be deposited and disbursed through a bank account established for this organization at the Campus Organizations Accounting Office and/or approved institution/office (must receive authorization via Campus Organizations Accounting Office). All funds must be deposited within 24 hours after collection. The Adviser to this organization must approve and sign each expenditure before payment."

Section Two: Dues

The amount of the dues shall be determined in the beginning of the academic year by the Executive Committee by a 75% affirmative vote. Dues may be paid at anytime during the semester. The treasurer shall maintain all financial records and shall countersign with the advisor for all organization transactions.

ARTICLE IX – MEETINGS

Section One: Chapter Meetings

Meetings shall be held on the second Monday of each month of the academic year at 7 PM. Special meetings may be called by a majority vote of the chapter or by a two-thirds vote of executive committee.

ARTICLE X – RATIFICATIONS AND AMENDMENTS

Section One: Approval

This constitution shall become effective upon approval by a majority vote of the general membership. This constitution must be signed by a minimum of the President and Advisor and approved by the Assistant Director of the Student Activities Center.

Section Two: Amendments and Ratifications

Proposals to amend and/or ratify this constitution shall be drafted in writing and submitted to the Executive Committee for discussion. If approved by a majority vote by the Executive Cabinet, the proposal will be voted on by the general membership. Approval will be required by a 2/3 vote of the general membership. Ratified and/or amended constitutions must be submitted to Student Activities Center within 10 days to Student Activities Center for approval.

Section Three: Updates

It will be the responsibility of the Executive Cabinet to ensure that this document is updated and made current with any approved amendments and/or ratifications as set forth above.

1
