Objective:Givengridpaper,acentimeterruler,aprotractor,andasheetofpattypaperthestudentswillgenerateandapplytherelationshipbetweenthescalefactorofdilationandthecoordinatesoftheimage,anglemeasures,perimeter,andareabycompletingdatatablesandbyredrawingfiguresongraphpaper.
Thestudentisexpectedtogeneratesimilarfiguresusingdilationsincludingenlargementsandreductions,graphdilations,reflections,andtranslationsonacoordinateplane,useandextendsimilaritypropertiesandtransformationstoexploreandjustifyconjecturesaboutgeometricfiguresanddescribetheresultingeffectsonperimeterandareawhendimensionsofashapearechangedproportionally.
LessonOverview:Inpartone,studentswillusepattypapertocreateadilationwithascalefactoroftwoonplanepaper.Studentswillthentransferthedilationtothecoordinategridandcreateadditionaldilationsofthesamefigurewithscalefactorsofthreeandone-half.Inparttwo,studentswillmakecoordinatedilationsofseveralfiguresandwilllookattheeffectofthescalechangeonthecoordinates,sidelengths,perimeter,andareaofeachimage.Extension:Studentscangraphthecoordinatesofthefourtrianglesinpartoneusingagraphingcalculatoranddeterminetheequationsfortheraysusedinthedilation.
Grouping:Studentsshouldworkingroupssotheycandiscusswitheachotherwhattheynoticeabouttheeffectsofthedilations.
Materials:Eachstudentwillneedacopyofthelesson,aseparatesheetofcentimetergridpaper,acentimeterruler,aprotractor,andasheetofpattypaper.Studentscantheusesamepieceofpattypaperforstepsonethrougheighttotransferthedilationstothegridpaper.Studentsshouldbeabletoworkthroughthedocumentontheirownwithteacherguidance.
