TheBroughtonGraduateFellowshipwasestablishedbythelateWilliam G. Broughton ofSchenectady,New York,in honor ofhis parents,HenryPrimm Broughtonand Jane TinkhamBroughton. The BroughtonGraduateFellowshipisa monetary award linked to the applicant’s budgetary needs to conductadvancedscholarlyresearchbygraduatestudentsthat maybepart oftheir dissertation, thesis or finalproject foragraduatedegree atTheSage Colleges. Students in graduate programs from the Schools of Education,HealthSciences,andManagement areeligible andmayapplyasanindividual ora team.

The criteria forselection ofBroughton Fellows are:

•Meritoriousgraduateresearch conducted by students

•Recordof outstandingacademic achievement

•Evidence ofcreativeandinnovative problem solving

•Clear budget reflecting monetary needs for conduction of research

To beawarded,Fellowsmust maintain outstandingacademicstatus and satisfactoryprogress in theirgraduatedegree program. Inaddition,eachBroughton Fellow is requiredto give apublic lecture,at the Sage Graduate ResearchSymposium or asimilarvenue.Broughton Fellows will be recognizedatcommencementbywearingablue cord.

Overview

1.TheBroughtonGraduateFellowship is open to currentgraduatestudents who are planning or in the initial stages ofconducting researchas part of their graduate degree program atTheSage Colleges (TSC).

2.A team of student researchersmaysubmit a singleapplication

3.Maximum award for each application is $2000.

5.Awards are made annually in the spring semester. Final applicationpackets will be accepted as one PDF that includes all required documents (except recommendation letters) by February 14via email .

6. Student applicantsare responsible for verifyingthat their submission is complete.

7.Applications that exceed the ten page limit or do not adhere to the specific details outlined in the instructions or are otherwise incomplete will NOT be reviewed.

8.Applicants may apply for recognition only (i.e., no funding is requested) but in the budget section of the application, respondents MUST state “No support is being requested. Application submitted for recognition of meritorious work only.”

9.Awardees are required to present a summary of their research in an oral presentation at the TSC annual Graduate Research Symposium or an agreed upon alternative.

Submission Instructions

The completePDF documents of the applications must be receivedbythe Broughton Fellowship email account (),byFebruary 16 by 11:59pm.Late submissions will not be accepted.

Applications should be submitted as a single PDF formatted to include the Broughton Graduate Fellowship cover sheet, resume for each participant, title page, Project Narrative (the Project Narrative section may NOT exceed 10 pages), and reference page. Be sure to use 12 point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, single spacing, and proper APA citation format in your Project Narrative and reference list.Note: Incomplete applications or applications that do not follow instructions will not be reviewed.

DetailedInstructions

  1. Broughton Graduate Fellowship Application Form

Submit one application for the group. Make sure the form is complete and identifiesall active research team participants. (All group members should be included on one form by including demographics on each participant by duplicating the first section of the document for each applicant.)

Section I. and II.

Student Information– For each participant provide the following information:(please list the Main Contact person first and duplicate the individual section for other team members)

  • Name and contactinformation for each applicant (list main contact person first). Complete information must be provided including: name,address, telephone number (thebest numberto contactyou ifthere arequestions aboutyourapplication) and SAGE email address.
  • Degree program (include department and degree program) and expected graduation date
  • Overall GPA at time of submission of the application (make sure the GPA is what isshown on the official program of study at the time of submission of the application)
  • Academic advisor name and contact information including the person’s title, affiliation, phone number and email address. The academic advisor is the Sage faculty member who is the advisor on record for each student.
  • Resume(2page maximumperperson) All team member resumes are to be included in the one pdf file that will be submitted. Resumes should include the following: education, work experience, community/volunteer experience, presentations, publications and other relevant information. Please be sure to include specific dates and location for each of these categories.

Section III.

Research Team Roles– For the research team please provide the following information:Name and role of each active participant on the proposed research project limited to 250 words maximum per person. This section should describe what each team member is contributing to the project and should demonstrate varying contributions/strengths of participants).(Please add additional pages to the cover sheet if needed.)

Section IV.

Research Advisor Information – The research advisor is the individual supervising the research project. Contact information should include name, title, affiliation, phone number and email address.

Section V.

Institutional Review Board(IRB)status– Provide information about the status of the application to the Sage IRB (IRB approval is not needed to apply but is required prior to commencement of research and distribution of funds). Specifically state if the project has not been submitted to the IRB, if it is under IRB review or if the project has been approved. Please provide the IRB project review number if applicable.

Section VI.

Formal Letters of Recommendation - Provide the names of two people who will submit letters of recommendation.

Instructions for Letters of Recommendations

  • Twoletters of recommendationarerequired perapplication group;donot submit morethan two letters. In selecting a recommender be sure the individual can speak to all participants’ abilities. At least one of the recommendations must address the significance of the research such as a faculty advisor or dissertation committee member).
  • Instruct recommenders to submit signed letters of recommendation that include their title and contact informationdirectly to and to include GPA if available. Unsigned recommendation letters will not be accepted and the application considered incomplete.

Section VII.

Project support – Provide a brief description of any additional support that has been sought or received for the proposed project.

B. ProjectNarrative (not to exceed 10 pages excluding title page and references) – In this section provide a detailed description of the project.

•Title Page– Provide the project title and a brief description of the project and listall active researchers.(The title page is not counted in page limit.)

•Introduction– Provide an introduction to the study including the primary study aimsand purpose of the study.

•Background– Provide context for the study including anabbreviated Literature Review.

•Research Methodology– Describe the proposed research methods including: study methodology, data collection, data analysis, study limitations and proposed timeline for submission of your research. Note: Ifyou areusingasurvey,questionnaire,or otherdatacollection tool please provide a copy of the instrument. If applicable,provide thesource andpermission to use the instrument in the researchproject withyourapplication (not counted in thepage limit; include this information in the appendix and refer to it in the project narrative).

  • Proposed Budget and Justification (aligned with the proposed research methodology) - Students may apply for funds up to a maximum of $2000 per proposal although may be only partially funded based on committee decision. You should provide detailed information about any internal or external funding sources that have been received or requested to support this project.

Funds may be requested for:small equipment purchases; software used for data collection or analysis; academic resources needed such as textbook or journal not otherwise available; transcription services; travel for data collection or attendance at networking events; printing and postage of surveys; conference attendance for those where the student has been accepted to present or when there is a clear need to attend for support networking or learning related to research; and other expenses directly related to data collection and analysis. No student stipends will be considered.Justification for each item in your budget must be clearly included.

Note:If you are requesting NO funding for the project you must specifically state that the application is being submitted for recognition of meritorious research only and funding for the project is not being requested.

•Projected Dissemination Plan- Awardees are required to present a summary of their research in an oral presentation at the TSC annual Graduate Research Symposium or agreed upon alternative. If an alternative presentation venue is being requested, plans should be provided in detail with intended submission dates and format of presentation. Students should describe additional their plan for presentation and any additional plans for dissemination and translation of their research.

References (not counted in page limit)- Reference list should be formatted following APA guidelines.

Project Narrative formatting requirements – Please use1 inchmargins, 12 point Times New Roman font, singlespaced, with proper APA citation format.You mayinclude in theheader or footer, thelastname(s) ofthestudent applicants and page number; please numberthepagessequentiallystartingwith“1”.A tableofcontents is not required. Adhereto thepagelimitations asindicated.Applications that do not following formatting requirements will be considered non-compliant and will NOT be reviewed.

Please note: Applicationreviewersinclude facultyandadministrators from across the college whomaynot befamiliarwiththe terminology, theories, models, andprotocols inyourdiscipline.
