  • Research on Coastal Resource Management in Tamil Nadu under the Young Scientist Fellowship program with the guidance of Dr.M.Devaraj, former Director, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute.
  • Currently, operating FOUR external-funded research projects in the areas of freshwater aquaculture development, microfinance, fisherwomen and gender issues and fisherfolk welfare development, valuation of natural resources (non-market valuation), empowerment of fisherfolk and policy.

Project Title: Performance Analysis of Fisherwomen Self Help Groups in Tamilnadu ( funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Mumbai).

Microfinance is an accepted policy intervention tool for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). This study focuses on assessment of fisherwomen empowerment and welfare development through the Self Help Groups (SHGs). It addresses the issues of innovations on savings and loan products in microfinance, socio-economics, cultural and political empowerment of fisherwomen besides poverty eradication and overall coastal rural economy development. Full report may be downloaded from the NABARD portal.

Project Title: Optimisation of Yield and Technical Efficiency Analysis for Aquaculture Development of Tamilnadu ( funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), NewDelhi).

Horizontal growth in aquaculture is followed by vertical expansion. As profit maximisers, fish farmers are expected to optimize their yield to maximize income. Technical efficiency and DEA tools are used to estimate the efficiency in aquaculture production and identify the contributing factors for the inefficiency. Scope for enhancing farm business income and aquaculture development through marketing strategies are explored.

Current Project : Monitoring and Evaluation of Special Projects under SGSY for the

Livelihood Development of Tsunami-hit Fisherfolk in Tamilnadu

The State Department of Fisheries is operating a Rs.260 million project on the Livelihood Development of Tsunami-hit Fisherfolk in Tamilnadu. I am undertaking the monitoring and evaluation of the two projects implemented by the Fisheries Department, Government of Tamilnadu, INDIA.

Current Project : Economic Valuation of Mangroves in Tamilnadu for their

Conservation and Management Funded by the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research This study deals with assessment of current status of exploitation, valuation of mangroves in Tamilnadu state, delineation of impacts of mangroves on the livelihood of fisherfolk and on protecting them and the shore against natural disasters, impacts of anthropogenic factors on mangroves and interventions required to conserve the mangroves.

Current Project : Socio-Economic Empowerment of Rural Fisherwomen Self Help

Groups through Enhanced Market Access

Funded by the Planning Commission, Government of INDI, this study deals with assessment of current status of economic independence and empowerment of fisherwomen through market linkages for economic activities undertaken by the fisherwomen Self Help Groups (SHGs). The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) which funded our earlier study runs the largest microfinance program in the world. It provides cheap credit, capacity building and other livelihood support. This research projectaims to make the production activities of the fisherwomen SHGs profitable and sustainable through aggressive marketing strategies.
