Park Opening – Discussion led by Lydia Bassett, Seattle Parks Foundation

Opening: September 24th and 25th, 2010

  • Saturday (25) is the public opening day, and will be filled with activities!
  • Hoping that it will be the largest public park opening ever!
  • There will be both programmed and unprogrammed activities
  • Activities will be both on land and on water
  • Event is being planned by The Adventure School
  • All events will be FREE
  • Organizations are welcome to participate by offering activities, etc.
  • 10k Run in morning
  • After run, dignitaries will speak, (10 – 11)
  • Fireworks in evening (hopefully)
  • Ivar’s is offering free clam chowder!
  • REI – paddle boarding
  • Also the same day as the Norm Blanchard Regatta
  • Theatrical/Musical events – potentially

Pond Boat Planning in the Park

  • Seattle Parks asked for a proprosal for programming from CWB
  • Emma Levitt and Mindy Ross have both been working on the plan
  • 100’ diameter pond in LakeUnionPark.
  • RC boats, power and sail in the pond.
  • Boats will be rented for ~ $5

Concerns and Ideas

  • What if someone pays $5 and the wind dies! Bummer!
  • Hydro boats on a pole
  • Will people want to go in the pond? How do we keep them out/allow them in?
  • Electric Racing boats would be cool
  • Anti-goose procedures?
  • School groups and the pond?
  • Ponds will always be used for purposes which they are not designed
  • Corporate team building activities
  • Arthur mini models!
  • Floating lanterns (Hiroshima Anniversary) and other Cultural events
  • Scheduling
  • Rubber band boats
  • Tubing/candle powered boats

Parking Issues

  • Parking map Noelle created on Google Maps
  • Only includes Standard Parking lots
  • Street parking also included
  • Where, how long? Price?
  • Include overnight options, free weekend and evening parking
  • What about other parking lot options? (non Standard Parking)
  • Needs to be a printed version as well
  • Include the historic ships and the organizations
  • Signage for parking in the area
  • Where is parking?
  • How to get to it?
  • What about a walking guide?
  • Iphone App for parking!
  • Add buses, routes, stops
  • Where are bike racks?
  • Stylize the map? Use a UW or college campus map as an example

  • Will be moored in Brownsville for the foreseeable future
  • Zodiac is now booking directly, no longer through an agency

CWB

  • Emma and Dick are going to a national conference in Alexandria Seaport about youth and boatbuilding
  • Legislature stuff – Historic Vessels Funding, didn’t make it out of Senate Ways and Means Committee, but will be in Capital Budget next year?

  • No news, Tim Gallagher is supportive of the project

  • Lighthouse folks, CapeMeers lighthouse was severely vandalized, over $500,000 worth of damage, Perpetrators were caught
  • HB 1386 – Joe Follansbee – how to allocate $550,000. Pat will forward information
  • Tacoma Tall Ships 2011 has been cancelled
