The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf serves the deaf and hard of hearing community as a multi-faceted innovative institution dedicated to the development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life, producing educated and self-directed citizens. ASD offers academic programs for children aged 3-21. The school also provides a wide range of student enrichment, counseling, and after-school activities for both day and residential students. ASD offers a statewide Birth-to-Three program as well as various Outreach services. ASD’s mission is to become the premier comprehensive center providing education and resources for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, their families and educational partners in Connecticut and beyond.

ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. If shopping is on the list then Blue Back Square, located in the center of town, offers many retail stores and a variety of restaurants to satisfy everyone.

SCOPEOF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics assumes the responsibility for the planning, scheduling, training, supervision, transportation and the conduct of his/her team, at all times. The coach helps guide the ASD athlete in preparing her physically, mentally, and socially.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics:

(a)Assures that all necessary steps have been taken for the safety of the team members.

(b)Is responsible for the care of injured team members, in accordance with School policies.

(c)Schedules practice sessions subject to league regulations.

(d)Prepares transportation schedules and requisitions.

(e)Maintains responsibility for the security of athletic facilities after games and practices, including supervision of leaving the locker rooms in a clean and orderly condition.

(f)Is responsible for the conduct of the squad members from the time they report to practice, game, or tournament, until they are returned to the supervision of dormitory personnel (or their parents).

(g)Other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have knowledge of the game and be able to teach the fundamentals of track to students. Competency in manual communication, public service license, or commercial driver’s license is highly desirable. Applicants can be assisted with obtaining the aforementioned requirements. A valid Connecticut Coaching Permit, CPR, and First Aid Certification are required.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

A stipend will be offered in accordance with the current Union contract. An additional stipend of $400 is available if a Connecticut Coaching Certificate has been secured.

***The establishment of this coaching position is dependent upon the number of students willing to participate in each session.
