This memo details Yale’s implementation of the changes to AACR2 in the 2001 amendments. There are three major rule revisions in the 2001 amendments to AACR2. The Library of Congress and OCLC have implemented these changes already.
The major changes affect:

ð  Chapter 9: Electronic Resources (was Computer Files)

ð  Entry under conference names

ð  Inclusion of British terms of honor in headings

CHAPTER 9: ELECTRONIC RESOURCES (WAS COMPUTER FILES)

Overview

1.  Chapter 9 has been renamed "Electronic Resources." The GMD "electronic resource" replaces "computer file”

2.  Conventional terminology (e.g., "1 CD-ROM") can now be used in the extent statement for electronic resources themselves and for electronic resources that accompany other materials.

3.  The entire chapter has been reissued although a number of the rules within the chapter do not contain any changes.

ð  YALE LIBRARY POLICY

Yale Library will apply revised Chapter 9 to items cataloged after Feb. 28, 2002.

A.  Use the General Material Designation (GMD) [electronic resource] for items that would have been given the [computer file] GMD.

B.  Do not apply the new rules retroactively.

C.  Accept cataloging copy using the pre-2001 Amendment terminology as is.

D.  Use conventional terminology in the extent statement for electronic resources and for electronic resources that accompany other formats. LC is choosing the option to use conventional terminology. Yale is, too.

E.  Use the standard terminology for sound discs and video recording. The option to apply conventional terminology is limited to electronic resources covered in chapter 9 and does not apply to sound discs or video recordings either as the object being cataloged or as accompanying sound discs or video recordings.

Examples regarding use of conventional terminology

Note: these examples are for purposes of illustration and are not prescriptive, e.g. one might use CD rather than CD-ROM or DVD-ROM rather than DVD.

For a computer file:
300 __ 2 CD-ROMs : |b col. ; |c 4 3/4 in.
For a book with an accompanying computer optical disc computer file:
300 __ 350 p. : |b ill. ; |c 25 cm. + |e 1 CD-ROM (4 ¾ in.)
For a mixed media DVD
300 __ 1 DVD : |b sd., col. ; |c 4 3/4 in.
BUT
For a sound recording, popularly known as a "CDs":
300 __ 3 sound discs (197 min.) : |b digital, stereo. ; |c 4 3/4 in.
For a book with accompanying CD (sound recording):
300 __ 350 p. : |b ill. ; |c 25 cm. + |e 1 sound disc (4 3/4 in.)
For a DVD of a motion picture:
300 __1 videodisc (146 min.) : |b sd., col. ; |c 4 3/4 in.

LC began applying chapter 9 after November 30, 2001. See the CSB Fall 2001 no. 94. The new LCRIs appear for the first time for 1.1C and 9.5B1. The relevant LCRIs are 1.1C; 9.3B1; 9.4F4; 9.5B1; 9.5D1.

ENTRY UNDER CONFERENCE NAMES

Conference publications are to be entered under the heading for the conference if the name of the conference appears anywhere in the item being cataloged (21.1B2(d)).

ð  YALE LIBRARY POLICY

Yale Library will apply the revised rules to original cataloging after Feb.28, 2002.

NOTE: LC will apply this rule revision to conference publications cataloged after November 30, 2001 (CSB 94, Fall 2001, LCRI 21.1B2; 21.30E).
INCLUSION OF BRITISH TERMS OF HONOR IN HEADINGS

British terms of honor ("Sir," "Dame," "Lord," "Lady") will no longer be included in headings (22.1C, 22.12) but will be retained in statements of responsibility (1.1F7) and can be used to resolve conflicts in headings (22.19B).

ð  YALE LIBRARY POLICY

Yale Library will apply the revised rules to all newly established headings contributed through NACO, and to all unestablished headings added to catalog records after Feb. 28, 2002. Yale will adopt the LC practice of not changing previously established headings unless the heading in the authority record needs to be changed for another reason. Yale will not apply the revised rules to headings being accepted without verification as part of copy cataloging.

NOTE: LC will apply this rule revision to headings being newly established after November 30 (CSB 94, Fall 2001, LCRI 22.1C).
