Tas Sabre News June 2008

Hi Sabre sailors

Sorry there was no copy for May…..too much work on!

Notice of Tasmanian Sabre Asssociation AGM.

We have finally set a date!

The AGM will be held on Wednesday 23rd July at 5.45pm at the Bellerive Yacht Club.

All Sabre sailors are welcome to attend.

Apart from the normal functions of the AGM, we need to set the date for the next State titles and to discuss the Nationals to be held in Tassie year after next.

Hope to see you there.

Training Sessions at LSC

Four sailors braved the cooler temps for a practice session in a sunny 8 to 15 knot NW breeze at LSC.

There were first’s all round-

Paula’s first capsize in a Sabre

Leigh’s first actual helm in a sabre.

Sally’s first capsize ever.

Dallas’ first win !

Next coaching session 12th July at LSC. On water at 10.15 am.

ApparentlyDeviot have some sessions happening as well. Contact George Fish for details.

New Sailor Profile

Sally Cooper out helming for only the second time in her new boat.

Sally started her sailing only 6 months ago, crewing on a 9 metre keelboat.

Once bitten with the sailing bug she was keen to experience helming.

A western shore dinghy club told her that it would be several seasons before she would be able to race!

Introduce Matt and his obsession with getting people into Sabres and you can guess what happened.

“We’ll have you sailing and racing in no time with a Sabre”

Sally had a couple of goes with the club Sabre and loved the feeling of sailing a dinghy.

It wasn’t long before she had located a boat and purchased “Fledermaus” complete with trailer….nice entry level boat for $1000.

Sally reckons that crewing on a keel boat has nothing on the thrill of doing everything on your own boat- balance, steering, tactics, sail trim, tacking and gybing.

Sally hoots with delight when the boat jumps onto the plane and skims across the river. I suspect she is hooked.

Sally has two goals with her new boat. One is to get good at racing and secondly to beat Dallas around the course. (Dallas has just purchased a Sabre so we’ll profile him next month.)

Best luck to you Sally with your new boat.

We're just 6 months away from the start of the SafetyBeach Sabre nationals in Victoria. Can we beat the 100 boat turn-up in Blairgowrie 5 years ago ? Read on for an update on how things are progressing.

Strong Interest around the clubs We're regularly speaking to our contacts in the various Sabre fleets both interstate and here in Victoria. It's pretty clear that the success of last year's nationals in Adelaide, and the big Blairgowrie nationals back in 03/04 has got a lot of people thinking. The guys from GippslandLakes are clearly fired up and intend to be here in force. Our fleet from Sugarloaf in Melbourne's outer north east is keen. Mt Martha - just next door to host club SafetyBeach - is revving up their fleet. Elwood is back on the scene after tasting championship sailing at the Vic states. Blairgowrie is trying to coax every one of its big racing fleet to head up for the week. Black Rock is rising to the challenge. Williamstown, Albert Park and Westernport - we're keen to hear how things are around your clubs. Interstate - the Tassie fleet are as keen as ever, particularly as it will be the warm-up regatta for when they host a year later. Adelaide & Goolwa - we've reserved spots for you in the boat yard, ordered in a pallet of West End beer, and have operators standing by waiting for your call. You have a title to defend ! Everyone - if you want to experience the buzz of a really big sailing regatta - then this is your chance !
Have you read the promotional brochure for the series ? Here is the link - all you'll need to know about the series, the club, and the region. map of the region is here accommodation list is here some general updates and photos from the website are here
Facilities at the club Safety Beach features a boat park second to none. Large, fenced, and next to the club. And the club has just installed large rainwater tanks so that Melbourne's water restrictions won't prevent us washing down our boats.

The social agenda So far we've got 3 nights planned for the regatta - a great 2 course welcome night at the start, a $10 pasta & auction night on 29 Dec and the presentation night. Add New year's Eve and that's something every second night.

The race format Now this is still draft - but we thought it would you'd be interested in seeing what the proposed format of the regatta is (and the fine print). We thought long and hard about the format, and tried to pull the best features from the nationals over the pat 5 years. So, we have a mix of courses with some short (say 65 min) , some long (say 90 mins). No morning racing unless the weather is not behaving. One less race day that last year, but one more than last time the nationals were in Vic. We hope to have the Notice of Race out by the end of July

The location An easy hour from Melbourne for those wanting to commute. With East Link opening this month, it will further cut travel times for those living in the east.
