Junior Cross Country Report

The two main recent events have been The County Cross Country Champs on 4th Jan and The final North Midlands league event on 11th Jan.

A very wet and muddy Shipley Park saw a good turn out from our juniors with a lot of good runs and medal success. In the girls races of note were strong runs from Lauren McNeil securing silver medal in the girls U11 race and Isabelle Roberts powerful and commanding run to win gold in the U15 girls race. Isabelle was strongly supported by

Elizabeth Pennington who took silver.

In all 26 juniors took part with the only real disappointment being the lack of entries at U13 boys, although Joe Cartwright a Notts AC athlete did compete for his school as required. In the boys events individual bronze went to Sam Barker in the U15 boys. Our teams did very well and won medals in the U13 and U15 girls as well as U15 and U17 boys. Well done to all who stayed the distance on those heavy churned up courses. Intercounties places went to all those finishing in the top 8 so it will be great to see those athletes wear their county colours in Birmingham on 8th March.

County Champs results Shipley Park 4th Jan.

Easier conditions were met at the final North Mids XC league at Wollaton Park. Again a good Notts AC turn out and some new athletes too. Good performances on the day frommany of our athletes again with Elizabeth Pennington shinning as she has done throughout the season with a consistent set of results. Again of note is the lack of U13 boys. Overall positions of real note were Elizabeth Pennington 2nd and although we did not collect any other individual trophies we were knocking on the door of many and you should all aim to keep the training going with a view of collecting individual prizes next season which I am sure you will!

From a team perspective the U13 girls came 2nd, U15 came 1st and U17 girls 3rd. In the boys the U15 came 2nd overall. The next events are the Midlands XC champs at Leamington on 25th Jan and of course the big one, The National XC champsat Wollaton Park on 22nd February. We have entered 23 athletes into the nationals and 16 into the Midlands. Unfortunately our U11's are too young for these events but I am sure thedeveloping talent will shine through next year.

LADIES ROAD AND CROSS COUNTRY

NOTTS/DERBYSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPS - SHIPLEY PARK 4.1.2014

On arrival at Shipley Country Park, it bought back memories of national xc championships at Alton Towers a few years ago – although not quite as bad! Anyway, a very muddy course and only one lost spike (which was later retrieved) from our group, proved not to be an issue for the Notts AC ladies. Yet again, some great performances, which I guess were enhanced from having raced there only a few weeks prior. The senior women’s race saw Jenny R and Jo B racing in their Derbyshire vests, with a further eight girls competing in the Notts senior women’s championships and Hannah and Sarah in the under 20’s competition. Fantastic races, bought the girls both individual and team medals, together with lots of mud which I understand took a long time to get rid of!!! My congratulations to everyone who raced – in particular – to Emma Medina who made her club debut. Also I was delighted that 8 of the squad were selected to represent Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in the Inter County championships in March. The icing on the cake was to have the ladies come away with so many medals: U20/U17 County Champions, Sarah Hemington Under 20 silver medallist, Senior Women County Champions, Senior Women Team Runners Up, Laura Day – Nottinghamshire individual silver medallist, Jo Finch – Nottinghamshire bronze medallist and Aly Wile V35 bronze medallist. What a fantastic day – well done everyone.

NORTH MIDS XC LEAGUE – WOLLATON PARK 11.1.2014

A week later from the deepish mud of Shipley Park, and we had the last of the North Midlands XC league races. The weather could not have been much different. A lovely spring-like day, with a little bit of mud - nothing like the week before. This just made the course fairly soft and not too muddy under foot, even round the dreaded corner near to Trev’s gate. Special mention to Jenny Gibbon who made her Notts debut in this race – the first of many races I hope!!! The senior women’s team went into this fixture with a 60+ point lead, although nothing could be taken for granted. It was still an exciting day, cheering on the girls and all the other Notts runners. Well done to the senior women’s team on winning the league, Jo Birtwistle on coming third overall and to all the other Notts AC runners who competed and, in particular, to those who took away medals. The senior ladies results were as follows:

7 Jo Birtwistle 22.24 28 Lindsey Harper 24.10

8 Jo Finch 22.26 60 Jenny Gibbon 27.09

17 Catherine Charlton 23.13 70 Emma Medina 27.59

19 Jane Pidgeon 23.28 73 Julie Lambourne 28.08

Ladies you have had the most amazing start to 2014, long may this continue. Midland Championships are in a couple of weeks, and you are all running well. Perhaps you will come away with some sort of team medal? It’s not long, also, until the National championships on our home turf. Keep up the hardwork in training and you will continue to reap the rewards and again have a fantastic race in Wollaton Park in February.

I’m not going to get too excited – but road races will shortly be upon us and what can you all do there? PB’s and more silverware?
