No prerequisite for Art I

Materials:

*$20 supply fee due first week

(fee covers special supplies used in class such as drawing paper, paint, brushes, clay etc.)

  • 1-1.5 inch 3 ring binder with notebook paper
  • Dividers with pockets
  • Spiral sketchbook 100 pages (spiral along side not top)
  • Pencils-non-mechanical
  • Extra erasers
  • Two sharpie markers-Fine and ultra fine
  • Two magazines for cutting- Keep PG

Grading:

Daily grades are worth 15% of the student's grade.

Students will receive up to 20 points a day for participation. This will equal up to 100 points for the week (Daily Grade). Daily Grades will be given for daily warm up (Bell Ringer) exercises, sketchbook assignments, research, unit sheets, notes and folders. Clean-up is also a part of participation.

Project grades are worth 50% of the student's grade.

Project grades will be earned by creating artwork and or reports lasting longer than one day.

Test grades are worth 35% of the student's grade.

Test grades will cover unit information, vocabulary, art history, art criticism and any other information covered in class. I will give quizzes, quarter and semester exams on the material covered. Tests may include multiple choice; fill in the blank, and /or essay questions. Students will receive information as to what type of test will be given in advance along with a study guide.

The grading scale is based on 100 points.

A= 90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=0-59

Extra Credit:

Extra credit can be received by visiting a museum or gallery exhibit.

Students will need to provide proof through a report describing the experience and an analysis of at least one artwork viewed. (Let me know if you’re going and I will provide you with a worksheet for a gallery review.)

Expectations:

Art I students will explore various processes including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and other media. Students will always be working on a project or assignment there will be no down time or free time. At the beginning of each project students will be given a due date at which time artwork must be complete. 10 points will be deducted each day a project is late. After three days no artwork will be accepted. Students will be able to avoid this situation by working diligently in class.

They will also be given check sheets, guide lines, rubrics, procedures, and directions for each project. These will outline what is expected during the project and how it with be assessed at completion.

Level I Visual Arts is designed to address the needs of young artists who are eager to explore and experiment in creating two and three dimensional works of art. Students respond to personal experiences and conceptualized ideas as they learn to manipulate the elements of art and the principles of design through the use of a variety of processes, techniques, and media. Level I standards build on a student's prior knowledge of concepts and skills introduced in Grades K-8. This course serves as a transition between elementary and secondary grades, but because many Alabama students may not have had previous visual arts experiences, it is also structured to provide a foundation for the more advanced work on Levels II- IV.

Alabama Course of Study 2006 Visual Arts Education: Respond, Produce, Understand

PRODUCE Students will:

1. Create original works of art from direct observation.

1.1 Organizing spatial relationships utilizing linear and atmospheric perspective.

1.2 Creating the illusion of three-dimensional forms through tonal rendering.

1.3 Incorporating traditional categories of subject matter into original works of art.

2. Create original works of art using reflective ideas, personal experiences, and

imaginary content.

3. Apply steps artists use in the production of art, including conceptualizing ideas and

forms, refining ideas and forms, and reflecting on and evaluating both the

processes of production and the product.

4. Apply the elements of art and principles of design to the production of two and three

dimensional artwork.

5. Demonstrate the use of traditional, digital, and multimedia techniques to create works

of art.

6. Demonstrate safe and responsible handling of art materials, including cleanup,

storage, and replenishment of supplies where applicable.

RESPOND Students will:

7. Describe personal, sensory, emotional, and intellectual responses to the visual

qualities of a work of art.

8. Evaluate selected works of art to determine the effectiveness of their organization.

1.1 Describing the subject matter, elements of art, principles of design, media,

technique and style used in selected works of art.

1.2 Analyzing the formal organization of subject matter, elements of art, and

principles of design in selected works of art.

1.3 Interpreting expressive intentions and purposes on selected works of art.

1.4 Describing the effectiveness of expressive and meaningful communication

on selected works of art.

9. Compare works of art with functional and natural objects, aesthetic components,

and formal qualities.

1.1 Identifying aesthetic components and formal qualities in man-made and

natural objects.

UNDERSTAND Students will:

10. Utilize specialized terminology from art history, aesthetics, criticism, and

production in discussions of works of art.

1.1 Defining visual arts terminology to include the elements of art and principles

of design.

1.2 Describing the intrinsic qualities of a work of art.

11. Describe historical themes, symbols, and styles associated with works of art from

various cultures, times, places and including major periods and movements.

1.1 Identifying the style associated with selected works of major artists.

1.2 Describing the extrinsic context qualities of a work of art.

1.3 Using digital processes or media to identify symbols and styles associated with works of art from various periods

RULES FOR ART CLASS

1. BE ON TIME TO CLASS AND BE IN YOUR SEAT WHEN THE BELL

RINGS.

2. ALWAYS BE PEPARED FOR CLASS.

3. DO NOT TALK WHILE THE TEACHER OR ANYONE ELSE IS TALKING.

4. NOTES, OTHER CLASSWORK AND PERSONAL ITEMS NEED TO BE PUT

ASIDE DURING ART CLASS.

5. HAVE ONLY WATER WITH CLOSED CAPS. SNACKS AND FOOD ARE TO

BE EATEN AT SNACK AND AT LUNCH.

6. SHOW RESPECT AT ALL TIMES FOR THE SCHOOL RULES, PEOPLE

AND PROPERTY. (THIS ALSO INCLUDES SAFETY).

7. ALWAYS WORK TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY.

CONSEQUENCES

1. STUDENT WILL BE WARNED. (ONE TIME -NOT EACH DAY)

THERE WILL BE NO WARNINGS FOR CELL PHONES, FOOD, OR FOR

DISRESPECT.

2. NOTES, OTHER CLASSWORK AND PERSONAL ITEMS WILL BE

TAKEN UP AND THEN RETURNED AT THE END OF CLASS.

(THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE CELL PHONES. THEY WILL BE SENT TO

THE OFFICE WITH A REFERRAL).

3. FOOD WILL BE THROWN AWAY.

4. STUDENTS WILL BE WRITTEN UP ON AN OFFICE REFERRAL.

5. PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCE

A STUDENT'S PARENT(S) WILL BE CONTACTED WHENEVER NECESSARY. SEATING ALSO MAY BE CHANGED AT ANYTIME.

Students will also receive a list of classroom procedures that will need to be signed and kept in their binder as part of their folder grade.
