USTA Northern California is looking for coaches to work with our junior players at ourUSTA National Junior Competition Team Events.

We have many different coaching opportunities to offer and will be accepting applications for NorCal Team Events at the beginning of each year, so be sure to apply early –THE DEADLINE IS MARCH 18, 2016.

Our goal is to partner with top coaches in Northern California and provide opportunities to help these coaches in their efforts to develop the next generation of great American players within the section.Selection criteria, compensation, and time commitment will vary for each coaching opportunity.

The criteria for selection for any USTA coaching position is:

  • Actively supporting USTA programming and serving the missionof our section; “To promote and develop the growth of tennis as an inclusive and inviting lifetime activity in Northern California.”
  • Creating a positive environment by focusing on team building andpromoting excellent sportsmanship
  • Passing the USTA background check

Coaches are responsible for coaching on-court,as well as theoverall supervision of players during the entire duration of an event. Duties and responsibilities are different depending on the event, please check with USTA NorCal staff for a breakdown of responsibilities for a specific event. Some out-of-state events will require an extra day or two of travel. All of our NorCal coaches are required to go through the full background check prior to events.

NORCAL COACH QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience coaching at NorCal camps (PDC Combines (formerly PDCs), EDCs, Team USA Sectional Training Camps (formerly RTCs) and NorCal Team Workouts
  • Experience as National coach or Faculty Coach
  • Supports USTA programming and serves the mission
  • Ability to connect with young people of both genders
  • Demonstrates commitment to the tennis profession (PTA, PTR, USTA HP Cert, etc.)
  • College coaches preferred for 16’s and 18’s teams, or coaches must have experience with collegiate tennis

EVENT: 10’s Exchange

EVENT DESCRIPTION–This is a green ball only event.This event is a chance for the next generation of players to come together as a team and begin to form relationships and connections that will last throughout their junior tennis careers and beyond. It is also a great chance for our tennis parents to connect, share information and ideas, and work together to support the success of all of our players. Our 10 andUnder players will have the chance to compete against players from the SoCal, Pacific Northwest, and Intermountain sections. We will be accepting 1 Team Coach and 1 Team Manager for this event.

RESPONSIBILITIES–The coach is responsible for overall supervision of the team from the time they meet at the airport, until the time the players are back at the airport. The coach shall organize team building activities for the players and help direct the parents towards roles that may be helpful for the team. The coach shall work collaboratively with the manager.

EVENT: Pacific Cup, Zonals, Intersectionals, National Team

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Pacific Cup: The top ranked boy and girl from 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s in singleswill play as one team against teams from SoCal, Pacific Northwest, and Intermountain.

Zonals:The USTA sanctions four (4) Zone Team Championships (Zonals) for 16-and-under boys and girls, held in early July each year.

The Zonals provide an opportunity to compete against top juniors from other USTA Sections. They provide a great opportunity to play on a fun team and to develop and improve physical, mental, and emotional skills. They also allow players to experience a competitive team atmosphere and on-court coaching, just like college tennis.

For the 16s division, USTA NorCal will send two (2) teams, two (2) team coaches and two (2) team managers. The 16s teams will have 6 boys and 6 girls per team.

For the 14s division, USTA NorCal will send three (3) teams, three (3) team coaches and three (3) team managers. The 14s teams will have 6 boys and 6 girls per team.

For the 12s division, USTA NorCal will send three (3) teams, three (3) team coaches and three (3) team managers. The 12s teams will have 6 boys and 6 girls per team.

IntersectionalsBG National Team:The Intersectionals (BG16s & 14s) and National Teams (BG18s) are the highest level of team competition in the U.S. and have been designated as Level 1 National Ranking Tournaments. They area great opportunity to play on a fun team and to develop and improve physical, mental, and emotional skills. These events also allow players to experience a competitive team atmosphere and on-court coaching, just like college tennis. USTA NorCal will send its strongest players to compete for the National Team title.

The BG14s and 16s Intersectional Team Championships (Intersectionals) are team matches played on clay between teams from the 17 Sections of the USTA in early July each year.

USTA NorCal will send one (1) BG14s team, one (1) BG16s team, and one (1) coach and one (1) manager for each team. Each team will have 4 boys and 4 girls.

The National Team Championships (National Teams) are team matches played between teams from the 17 Sections of the USTA in late July each year.The National Teams provide an opportunity for NorCal’s top juniors to be seen by college coaches and to compete against top juniors from other USTA Sections.

USTA NorCal will send one (1) B18s team, one (1) G18s team, and one (1) coach and one (1) manager for each team. Each team will have 7 players.

RESPONSIBILITIES – Facilitate a team workout for the team they are selected to coach. Coaches are responsible for overall supervision and coaching players. Work collaboratively with other team coaches and managers.

ADDITIONAL INFO

USTA NorCal will have designated Team Managers for all team events except for 12s Zonals. Coaches attending Zonals are responsible for coaching a team of 12 players (6 boys and 6 girls). For the 14s, and 16s Intersectional Team Championships and 18s National Team Championships are responsible for coaching a team of 7-8 players. The coach is responsible for the well-being of all players once the trip begins.

There will be a team workout held by team coaches and USTA NorCal staff for players participating in the 12s, 14s and 16s Zonals and 18s National Team Championships in July 2016 at a location TBD (more info to come shortly). The workout is approximately three (3) hours and will include no less than two hours of tennis and an orientation meeting. Attendance by the team coaches is mandatory. Compensation will be $100 total for the workout, which will be included in the compensation check at the end of the team trip.
