Advanced Placement Chemistry Summer Assignment

Your summer assignment consists of the thorough completion of the first three chapters of the textbook and memorizing the common ions. These topics are all introductory and were covered in your first year of chemistry. We will hit the floor running in August with little time to review. While we cover topics that are the same as first year concepts, we will cover them at a higher level with more difficult calculations and deeper understandings so you need to have a solid basis to build on.

For each chapter, you must complete the following:

·  Careful reading of the chapter The chapter tests and the AP exam are challenging. You will need to have a deep understanding of the big topics of the chapter and know some specific examples about chemicals that may be casually mentioned in the pages of the text. Consider reading the chapter review both before and after you read as well as applying any reading strategies that you have learned throughout your high school career (ie. Browsing through the chapter to look at pictures, diagrams, and section titles).

·  Detailed notemaking The notes that you make for yourself for each chapter will benefit you as you prepare for each test and the AP Exam. They will require you to organize ideas, pick out the most important concepts, and include valuable supporting examples and details. Take time preparing these so that they are complete and well organized. You will thank yourself later! The format of the notes is not important to me – you should use the method or methods that you find the most useful (outlining, graphic organizers, etc.) While there are not a specific number of note pages required, most chapter will require several pages of note in order to receive full credit for detailed notemaking.

·  Question completion A required set of 10-15 problems from the end of the chapter questions is assigned for each chapter. As with all work done in the class, all work must be clearly show.

NWNCNK (no work, no credit, no kidding)

For non-math problems, always provide some explanation for your answers.

No one work answers.

Chapter Assignments

Answers only must be emailed to Mrs. Lilley at by the given due dates. Complete work and explanations and notes will be graded on the first day of class. If you are unable to meet deadlines because of vacation plans, you must email me before the due date to set up a new deadline.

Chapter 1:

30, 34, 36, 48, 54, 56, 68, 85, 89, 91, 95, 103

Chapter 2:

24, 30, 40, 56, 58, 72, 84, 93, 97, 116

Chapter 3:

24, 38, 42, 52, 56, 64, 70, 78, 100, 114, 122, 125

You will have the Chapter 1-3 Test within the first week of class. Be sure to make notes as to the topics/problems that you have trouble with so that they can be addressed during the first class periods. (Write questions in the margin, etc. – you will forget what had you confused by the time we come back to school). The topics that we review/practice will be based on your questions. The more problems you practice the more confidence you will gain. Practicing more difficult problems will deepen your understanding and raise your confidence.

Common Ions: You will need to memorize the fomulas, charges and names of the common ions from the common ion sheet before the second exam. I recommend that you make some flash cards and being studying them over the summer. You need to know all of the common charges of the metals that have more than one charge (ie. Copper(I) and copper(II)). We will have quizzes on these starting the second week of school.

Feel free to email me over the summer if you have questions regarding the class or the summer assignment. I will probably only be checking this on a weekly basis, so be patient for my response!

Enjoy you summer!
