2017 BORDERLAND SWING TOURNAMENT
Greetings, Colleagues!
The Miners of The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the Tejanos of El Paso Community College (EPCC) invite you to attend the 2017 Borderland Swing Tournament being held the weekend of January 27th, 28th, and 29th in El Paso, Texas, our friendly Sun City! Part I on Friday-Saturday, will be hosted by EPCC; Part 2 on Sunday will be hosted by UTEP. Both tournaments will be held on the Transmountain Campus of El Paso Community College, located at 9570 Gateway Blvd. North, El Paso, TX 79924.
Not only does El Paso offer a climate which is typically free of severe winter weather, it is also an exciting city to visit, both culturally and geographically. Located in far West Texas along the Rio Grande River and the US/Mexico international boundary, El Paso and its sister city of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, form a large multicultural urban area. Without leaving El Paso, which is ranked among the safest large cities in the US, you and your students will get a taste of our unique borderland culture, where American Indian, European and Latinx influences have melded into a culture which is richly complex and fascinating, with both English and Spanish being spoken everywhere. Scenic roads along the mountain range which transects the city give spectacular views of two countries (the US and Mexico) and three states (Texas, New Mexico and Chihuahua). All types of food are available, but the Mexican food of the El Paso borderland is authentic, delicious, and not to be missed!
The tournament will feature IPDA and NPDA Debate on Friday, and I. E. tournaments on both Saturday & Sunday featuring all AFA-NIET events. Awards will be presented to all students who break to out rounds in IPDA Debate, finals in Individual Events, top speakers in IPDA Debate and Individual Events, as well as to the top Novice competitor in each event. Sweepstakes will be awarded to the top three Universities and top three Community Colleges (if warranted) in Debate and Individual Events for Part I and for I. E. in Part 2. In addition, the Overall Borderland Swing Sweepstakes for the entire weekend will be presented at the Sunday Awards ceremony.
While there is no designated tournament hotel, there are many lodging options in the El Paso area that are moderately priced. Our tournament hospitality includes the following: Coffee service will be offered each morning; dinner will be provided on Friday evening, and lunch will be offered both Saturday and Sunday.
We look forward to seeing you this spring in the Sun City!
