The JC Smith Scholarship Fund

Five scholarships of £1,000 each will be awarded each year to the five best Home students enrolling in September for an undergraduate course in the School of Law and who, at the time of application satisfy one of the following criteria:

  1. The student has a place on, or has attended at, a Sutton Trust Summer School; or
  2. The student is, at the time of application, in receipt of a 16–19 bursary; or
  3. The student is, at the time of application, in receipt of a means tested welfare benefit.

The scholarship will be renewable each year provided that the student maintains satisfactory academic progress, and provided that they continue to qualify for government assistance in the form of a maintenance grant.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the academic qualifications of the applicants and will be decided after we have received results of all your academic qualifications. Where there appear to be two or more equally qualified applicants we reserve the right to make an award to what may appear to us to be the more deserving of the applicants on the basis of the information available from your UCAS application forms.

Definition of ‘Home’ student

Your LEA will decide your residency status. To be classed as a ‘Home’ student you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the three year period prior to the start of your course. Students granted refugee status and European migrant workers may also be eligible. If you are unsure of your status you should contact your LEA for further information.

Applying for the Scholarship

You can apply for a scholarship after receiving an offer from the University of Nottingham. Your application should be accompanied by evidence of the condition on which you may qualify. Any offer of a scholarship will be conditional until evidence of any outstanding eligibility criteria is provided.

Scholarships awarded prior to the start of the academic year will be paid in early October once you are registered and attending the University.
