Philosophy: The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the relationship of our planet to the universe. The overall organization of the class follows the popular and effective “Earth-out” progression. The course starts by developing the birth and development of astronomy throughout history. Looking at the earth and moon, we will then journey out into space as we investigate the solar system. As we realize the most important feature of our solar system is the sun, the course researches the birth, life and death of a variety of stars. The final portion of the course investigates galaxies, the birth of our universe, and asks the question “are we alone?”The student will be evaluated for cognitive achievement through a variety of assessments. The variety of evaluation styles is intended to strengthen points of weaknesses and to reinforce areas of confidence. The intention of this class is to produce students who can properly develop critical thinking skills, evaluate problems, and create planning dynamics to properly evaluate issues central to astronomy.

Class Rules:The school provides students with a handbook that serves to explain the conduct and attendance expectations of Chariho Students. The handbook can also be used to organize their assignments. It is the intention of this class to follow the school’s mission statement and student expectations in words, deeds, actions, and thoughts. Two essential objectives central to the success of a productive learning environment are the practice of concepts learned and the importance of asking questions when concepts are difficult. The safety contract must be signed and returned before participation in any lab activity
