American History Global History English I

All Lowellville students must follow the guidelines and requirements set forth by the student handbook. This handbook can be found on the school website.

PROCEDURES/EXPECTATIONS

1. You must be in the classroom and in your seat by the time the bell rings.

2. If you have a question or concern during class, always raise your hand.

3. If you need to sharpen your pencil, you must do it before the bell rings.

4. You must have all supplies required for class. You must bring a pen or pencil to class. Black or blue ink is required; any other color will not be accepted.

5. The bell will not dismiss you, I will.

6. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.

7. Bullying will not be tolerated.

8. Participation is part of your grade. If you are not participating in class, your grade will reflect this.

MISSING AND LATE WORK

It is your responsibility to get the assignments from the teacher when you are absent. If you are missing work you may refer to the online classroom for all information or approach your teacher for the work. Any work submitted after the test for that content will not be scored or added to the grade book. Students will receive a 25% deduction penalty for all work that is submitted late daily.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Plagiarism, copying, cheating, sharing homework, or taking credit for any work that you didn’t do will not be tolerated. You will receive a zero for the assignment and you will be required to redo the work.

·  PLAGIARISM - When an individual uses another person’s ideas, expressions or writing as if they were his/her own. That includes copying verbatim, paraphrasing without crediting the source, and using an idea without citing the source. NOTE: Youcan use other people’s ideas. Just give credit where it is due. That is to say, acknowledge your source.

·  CHEATING ON TESTS AND QUIZZES – bringing answers into the test room, copying from another student, sharing answers with another student, using unauthorized notes or technology

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

U.S. HISTORY – 8TH GRADE:

Eighth grade students will study the United States from 1492 to 1877. Using historical evidence such as primary documents, geography, vocabulary, and cause effect students will comprehend the big ideas that shaped the United States including Early Explorers, Colonial Expansion, British Control, American Revolution, and the Reconstruction.

GLOBAL HISTORY – 9TH GRADE:

Ninth grade students continue the chronological study of World History. This study incorporates each of the seven standards set forth in the State of Ohio’s Academic Content Standards. As students study historic eras, they consider influence of Geographic settings, cultural perspectives, economic systems and various forms of government. Students gain a deeper understanding of the role of citizens and continue to develop research skills.

The following units will be studied: Enlightenment Ideas, Industrialization, Imperialism, World War I, Russian Revolution, World War II, 20th Century Conflicts, and the Cold War.

ENGLISH I – 9TH GRADE:

This course will cover the Common Core State Standards set forth by the Ohio Department of Education. Students will be analyzing many different forms of literary and informational texts. Students will cite with textual evidence, study theme and central idea, study many complex characteristics within various works, understand figurative and connotative meanings, as well as many other types of literary devices relevant to the genre of story being studied. Works studied will be comprised of American literature, British literature, and World literature.

Students will be composing many types of writing. The students will be composing pieces of argumentative writing with claims and evidence, informational/expository writing, and narrative writing with particular emphasis on word choice and organization. In addition, students will become familiar with citation and be able to analyze sources for reliability.

The students will also be learning many forms of speaking and listening skills. Students will be participating in partner and group discussions.

The students will become more familiar with writing conventions in the forms of parallel structure, types of phrases, word relationships, clauses, semicolons, and colons.
