Jake: Did you buy a ticket for the big lottery draw on Saturday?

Dave: Yes, I did. I am excited about it. What would you do if you won?

Jake: If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world on a cruise. How about you?

Dave: My wife and I would retire and buy a house by the sea if we won.

Jake: If you bought a house by the sea, would you live in Australia or a different country?

Dave: We wouldn’t leave Australia; we’d buy something near Byron Bay.

8. FREE PRACTICE IDEA to match dialogue “A bright future”
Topic: Talk about wishes, and future possibilities
Grammar Aim: Second Conditional
Communicative aim: Students will be able to talk about what they will do if everything went their way.

Pre-Activity Preparation:

Make up a blank snakes and ladders sheet (see below), so there are enough for your students to work in groups of three.

For dice, if you don't have any, usually you can get hold of some blank CDs. You can make a dice substitute by using a felt pen to number a CD, then using a pen to spin it, so that when it stops on your thumb, that is the number.

For counters, you can screw up coloured pieces of paper, use pen lids, coins etc,.

Procedure:

Demonstrate by setting up one group that the other students can watch. Have a confident student throw the dice and move to a space. Then get another student (allocated with the question list) to read out a question. Then get the students, whose turn it is, to answer the question. Show that you are giving an opinion on the quality of the English, and that you are letting them stay on the space only because of their good English.

Put other students into small groups and start.

Rules:

When students land on a square they must start speaking within 5 seconds of hearing the question or go back to their last position on the board.

If the teacher hears bad English the person having the turn must stay where they were.

Materials/student handout/s:

Prompt table and snakes and ladders board, one each per group.
