Expertise Summary
K. Cohen Tan has lived in the UK for close to a decade, and has worked on two campuses of the University of Nottingham. He first joined the University of Nottingham during his PhD studyas a Teaching Associate in School of Modern Languages and Cultures from 2009 to 2011, where he taught undergraduate modules on Psychoanalysis and Semiotics. During that time, he also held the position of Senior Tutor at Cavendish Hall. He moved to the University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus in 2011 as a Teaching Fellow in the Division of International Communications, and won the inaugural Chancellor’s Award 2011-12 for teaching.
His research interest is in critical and cultural theories, comparative and continental philosophies, and their scope for meaningful interaction.He studied creative writing with Singapore’s national poet Edwin Thumboo and guest-recorded for an anthology of short stories for the “Read Around” series.
His PhD dissertation took a comparative study of Jacques Derrida (20th century French Deconstruction theorist) and Nāgārjuna (2nd century Indian Buddhist philosopher), theorising the relation between the deconstructive concept of différance and the Buddhist concept of śūnyatā (emptiness). He is currently working on a monograph publication of the dissertation, and will be editing a forthcoming book with Andy White.
