Guide to Finding Journals Using ‘Google Scholar’and PubMed

About Google Scholar

Google Scholarprovides details about:

  • full text electronic journals available to NHS staff, whether purchased nationally, regionally or locally
  • abstract and citation information for other articles

You need an NHS OpenAthens password to gain access to online resources available to you.

How to Access Google Scholar

  • Go to Google Scholar site
  • You can search citation and abstract information without further set up
  • Select your Local Library Service (see below) in order to see which full text articles are available to you

Link to Library

First you will need to set up a Library Link. Go to the Google Scholar homepage at go to ‘Settings’:

Select ‘Library Links’ on the left and search for ‘South Staffordshire & Shropshire’:

Check the box and click save. These settings will be saved on the PC, if you use a different computer you may need to redo this set up (in the case of having a gmail account if you are logged into Google Scholar these settings will usually be saved to your user profile)

Search for articles by topic or keywords as you would normally do in Google Scholar. Where the Library provides full text access using NHS Athens you will see this:

Select to name of the article to be taken to the abstract. For most articles you will need to log in on each site with your NHS Athens details, the method for this differs by site, but is usually labelled ‘Sign in with Athens’ or ‘Institution Sign In’. If you have any problems with this, contact the library.

For articles which do not display ‘SSSFT Journals’ the Library may still be able to supply a copy via our Article Request service. Contact the Library for more details.

About PubMed

PubMedprovides details about:

  • full text electronic journals available to NHS staff, which have been purchased locally
  • abstract and citation information for other articles

You need an NHS OpenAthens password to gain access to online resources available to you.

How to Access PubMed

  • Go to PubMed site

If you access PubMed from other links you will not be able to see which articles we subscribe to.

  • You can search citation and abstract information without further set up
  • For articles available through your SSSFT Athens Account you will see this logo:

For articles which do not display this logo, the Library may still be able to supply a copy via our Article Request service. Contact the Library for more details.

Please note: While some articles listed on PubMed are freely available without a subscription, some of the links titled ‘Full Text available’ will require a subscription at the host site, and will therefore not all be available to you.
