Ceiling Tiles

Introduction:

Students will get used to painting on larger surfaces by painting two ceiling tiles that somehow interact with each other. Students may choose where their tiles will be located when complete

Objectives:SWBAT:

  • Use the internet and various other sources to research ideas.
  • Draw or trace their chosen ideas onto a ceiling tile
  • Mix paint to create desired colors
  • Demonstrate painting techniques such as blending
  • Demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship
  • Complete two ceiling tiles with a unified theme
  • Evaluate their work and the work of their peers by means of a class critique.

Standards:

9.1.12C: Integrate and apply advanced vocabulary to the arts forms..

9.1.12G: Analyze the effect of rehearsal and practice sessions.

9.1.12H: Incorporate the effective and safe use of materials, equipment and tools into the production of works in the arts at work and performance spaces.

9.1.12J: Analyze and evaluate the use of traditional and contemporary technologies for producing, performing and exhibiting works in the arts or the works of others.

9.2.12I: Identify, explain and analyze philosophical beliefs as they relate to works in the arts.

9.3.12A:Explain and apply the critical examination processes of works in the arts and humanities.

9.4.12A:Evaluate an individual’s philosophical statement on a work in the arts and its relationship to one’s own life based on knowledge and experience.

Procedures:

Part One:

  • Discuss project with students
  • Allow students to brainstorm and research ideas

Part Two:

  • Demonstrate how to transfer/ translate drawings to the ceiling tiles.
  • Demonstrate how to use the projector
  • Allow students to transfer/ draw ideas to/on the ceiling tiles

Part Three:

  • Demonstrate how to mix and properly apply paint on large surfaces: Blending
  • Allow students to paint their ceiling tiles
  • Have students place ceiling tiles back in ceiling when complete

Part Four:

  • As a group, discuss ceiling tiles. Discuss things that worked/ didn’t work. Strengths and weaknesses as a class.

  • Ceiling tiles
  • Tempera paint
  • Projector
  • Projector acetate
  • Sharpie markers
  • Computers with internet and printer access
  • Various books as resources
  • Paint brushes
  • Paper towels
  • Pencils
  • Various other embellishments as needed
