Further particulars for posts in the Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences

The Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences (CLAS) is an active group within the Medical Education academic unit within the Faculty of Medicine.

The Faculty has an effective team of educationalists, teachers and support staff who all work together to develop and enhance the curriculum. The Medical Education academic unit consists of the Medical Education Development Unit (MEDU) and the Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences.

The principal role of the CLAS is the development and provision of human anatomy teaching and learning for undergraduates in medicine and disciplines of professions allied to medicine. Teaching areas include gross anatomy, histology, embryology and neuroanatomy. Several members of academic staff also have curriculum management and development roles within the School. In addition to undergraduate teaching, we contribute to courses for a range of postgraduate professionals including surgeons, anaesthetists and other health professionals.

Our shared philosophy in teaching and learning has evolved over a number of years. Central to our method of delivery for our courses is a student-centred approach. We teach anatomy mainly within the first two years of the 5 year and 4 year graduate entry Bachelor of Medicine programmes providing students with a resource rich environment in which to work, including: dissected material; plastinated specimens; museum specimens; plastic models; bones; imaging material; and computer-based programmes. Students do not dissect but are provided with a wide range of high quality prosections produced by Centre staff. In addition we run Student Selected Units in Year 3 and projects for the Bachelor of Medical Sciences in Year 4.

CLAS recently relocated to SouthamptonGeneralHospital where a state-of-the-art facility has been designed for us.

The current staff members include: Senior Lecturer/Director; Principal Teaching Fellow; Senior teaching Fellow; 4 Teaching Fellows (2 vacancies); Senior Experimental Officer (shared appointment); Anatomical Sciences Laboratory Manager; Anatomy Dissector; Learning Resources Facilitator and Learning Resources Technician; 2 Technicians; Secretary.

We are a small, energetic and friendly team who are hardworking, committed and enthusiastic about anatomy and we would welcome likeminded individuals to join us.
