A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MISS LAURIE JONES OF EASLEY ON RECEIVING THE 2003 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD FOR HER COMMITMENT TO GIVING HELP AND HOPE TO THE PEOPLE OF PICKENS COUNTY.
Whereas, dedication to community service is a treasured characteristic in a person of any age, as that person has a tremendous impact on disadvantaged individuals and inspires others to become more involved in volunteer projects; and
Whereas, when the youth of this State find the time in their busy schedules to help the needy, we are assured of the promise of this generation of young people and their dedication to the betterment of their communities; and
Whereas, Miss Laurie Jones, 18, of Easley and a senior at Easley High School has demonstrated her devotion to helping others through her numerous volunteer activities and, especially, by creating the “Rollin’ in Pickens County” project, where she led her community in collecting five hundred dollars, one thousand cans of food, and one hundred blankets for underprivileged families; and
Whereas, this project not only provided necessities for citizens of Pickens County but also educated the people of the area about local needs and ways to get involved; and
Whereas, because of “Rollin’ in Pickens County,” Miss Jones has received local and national recognition from a wide array of groups for her volunteer service; and
Whereas, most recently Prudential Financial, in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, a group which honors young volunteers across America, presented Miss Jones with the 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Award because of her unwavering commitment to serving others; and
Whereas, the success of the State of South Carolina and the overall success of American society depend upon the considerable talents and charitable attitudes of young people like Miss Jones; and
Whereas, her leadership abilities and generosity have gained her the respect of people throughout the community, State, and nation, and these qualities are sure to bring Miss Jones much success in her future endeavors. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, wish to extend their congratulations to Miss Laurie Jones of Easley on receiving the 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her commitment to giving help and hope to the people of Pickens County.
