CMIT South PTO Meeting Minutes

February 10, 2015

The meeting was called to order by Bobby Hand.

Minutes and Treasurer’s report were read. Amend minutes to add Picture Day under Upcoming Events

Principal’s Update

Facility Update

·  Working on permit, budget and floorplan

·  Nothing is 100% confirmed

·  CLF intends to purchase the building

·  Saw blueprint

·  Phase 1 will focus on housing 6th – 8th graders; Phase 2 focus on high school the following summer

·  Construction began in May 2011 for CMIT North and took several months and was completed in time for the school year. Since using the same construction company, expect school will be ready in time as long as start in May or early June

·  Maryland is ranked 43 out of 44 in Charter schools. There are a lot of rules and regulations

·  Will provide PTO with any updates

·  There will be enough space for drop off/pick up; good amount of parking

·  Can tour new location prior to school starting?

o  Can’t promise. At CMIT North, tours were held by parents coming in to help assemble desks and get the building ready. Contractor may still be doing construction until the 1st day of school

·  Will share floor plans of new building in advance?

o  Yes

Staff Changes

·  There is nothing going on in the building. No one is scaring the teachers away. People leave for different reasons. In all instances had qualified teachers in the classroom the next day so no disruption in learning to students

·  Ms. Ortiz – certification issue

·  Ms. Harvey – decided not to teach and other confidential reasons

·  Mr. A – decided to change careers

·  Mrs. Beyaz – moved out of state for family reasons

·  Contact Mr. AG for any specific or other questions

Bowling League

·  Brings parents, staff and students together

·  Typically 8-10 weeks

·  Fundraising event

·  Parent from CMIT South is coordinating with CMIT North. Location may be College Park or Crofton

Other

·  Robotics Club will continue. May combine electronics and robotics

·  Home Visits – will continue as much as they can. Will be some Saturday & weekday evenings

·  PARCC Assessment

o  Ms. Asafa planning a parent information night to provide information

o  Will be Pearson login

o  Digits – if on, should be ready

o  Reading – difficult for most middle schoolers; working on writing

o  This is the first year so very limited information from PGCPS

o  Using Chromebooks daily will help students comfort level since familiar

Multicultural Event

·  CLF has 2 major events – STEM Fair and Multicultural Event

·  Each school is requested to donate $500

·  Will be Friday, March 13th at 7pm in Hanover MD

Website

·  As a technology school, we should improve our website so asking to create a Task Force

·  Students should also be involved, they may have good ideas

Insurance

·  Motion and PTO body approved the purchase of insurance. Will cover 1 year from the date set up

Talent Show

·  Natalie Melton gave an update on the Talent Show. Concluded 2nd round auditions last week; SGA is participating

·  Will be Friday, March 6th at PG Community College in the Queen Anne Theatre. Tickets $5 in advance; $7 at the door

·  Want to get a local group of artists to perform

·  Will be selling food

·  Winners will get iPads, etc..

·  Need parent volunteers to assist with bake sale, ticket sales, A/V, etc..

·  If parents are or know people who are vocal coaches, musicians, comedians, magicians, etc., their help is needed. Want the kids to put on a show and it would be helpful to receive pointers from experts

·  Ticket sales start February 18th

·  May set up Eventbrite for parents to pay online so kids don’t lose tickets

·  Will set up Volunteerspot.com so parents can volunteer.

Membership Drive

·  Class with the most PTO members will receive pizza party. As of today, the standings are:

o  3rd – UMD & Princeton tied (26%)

o  Hampton – 32%

o  MIT – 41%

·  Drive will go through next Friday

Fundraisers

·  Chick Fil-A – Friday 2/20 @ Steeplechase 7-9pm

·  Penny Drive – Can’t leave money out so need to reconsider process

·  Valentine Candygram – will be postponed

Family Fun Day

·  June 10th, 11th or 12th

·  Allen’s Pond - $280 (can go to City Hall to get application); has paddleboat, basketball court, park, amphitheater, pavilion

·  FOP Lodge - $425

·  Watkins Park

·  Patuxent River Park (Upper Marlboro, off 301)

Book Fair

·  2/27 - Preview for kids

·  3/2 – Muffin for Moms Monday

·  3/3 – Team Shirt Tuesday
