Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival 2018:
February 23-February 25th
Dear Jazz Band 11, Jazz Band 12 parents,
We are pleased to inform you that Semiahmoo Jazz Program is again returning to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. This jazz festival is the largest educational jazz festival in the world and it has been a tradition since the early 1990s for the Semiahmoo Music Program to attend.
Why are we going to this festival? There are many aspects of this festival that make it well worth attending. Competitive festivals, like this one, motivate our students and help them to have specific musical goals. With numerous Semiahmoo performances including Jazz Band 11, Jazz Band 12, several Jazz Combos and many soloists, we are truly excited to hear our students strive for excellence worthy of a festival of international stature. In the past we have had several of our bands, combos and soloists be chosen as "Most Outstanding" in their categories. On Friday and Saturday evening we will be attending two festival concerts to hear some of the best jazz musicians in the world. We encourage our students to go online to preview these artists prior to departure.
In past years it has been quite expensive to go to this festival. We are always concerned about the financial burden music tours have on our students’ families, particularly when they have more than one tour in a year. With this in mind the music Directors, and Music Socitety Executive have agreed to make a substantial contribution to reduce the per student cost of this tour.
The original tour cost without any contribution is about $470 Canadian a student.
We are pleased to share that we have reduced this cost through generous donations and help from the music society to $150 Canadian a student!
PLEASE MAKE YOUR CHEQUE OUT TO THE SEMIAHMOO MUSIC SOCIETY
This per student cost includes: Transportation, Accommodation, Travel Health Insurance, Concert Tickets, and Continental Breakfast at the hotel. Not included: food, and spending money.
Attached you will find the following documents:
- Guardianship/Permission Form
- Trip Rules and Standards Form
- Informed Consent and Release of Liability Form
All of these forms along with a cheque for $150(Made out to the Semiahmoo Music Society) are to be turned in by November 27th, 2017.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
