Math Syllabus: Big Ideas Math Advanced 1

Course Objective:

This comprehensive course provides an introduction to key mathematical concepts such as equations and inequalities, exponents, graphing in the coordinate plane, etc… Concepts covered in previous years such as ratios, percentages, geometry and measurements are also reinforced.

This is the first part of the Big Ideas Math Advanced series. This pathway allows students to complete the Common Core State Standards for grades 6, 7, and 8 in two years. After completing this series, students will be ready for Algebra 1 in the eighth grade.

Textbook:

Big Ideas Math, Advanced 1 by Ron Larson and Laurie Boswell

Required Supplies:

·  2 notebooks or 1 multiple subject notebook ( wired or composition, no loose leaf paper)

·  Graph paper

·  Pens, pencils, highlighter

·  Folder (worksheets will be kept here)

·  Jumbo textbook cover

·  Simple calculator

Textbook: Advanced 1, Big Ideas Math 2014, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Grading Policy:

Grades will be based on three parts as follows:

Homework: 40%

Tests: 30%

Quizzes: 15%

Projects: 10%

Effort and behavior: 5%

Subject to change at the discretion of the teacher.

Please note:

·  Tests and quizzes will be kept in class after being reviewed by the student. Parents are welcome to view them at anytime. Grades will be communicated to the parents via JupiterGrades.

Homework Policy:

·  Homework will be assigned at the end of every section covered.

·  It is imperative that it is completed before the next meeting.

·  Late homework will be credited 50% of the total grade. On the due date, homework is corrected and solutions are provided. In the event a student is absent, he/she will be given a chance to make up the work, to be submitted the following meeting. Homework will be graded on a pass/fail basis.

·  If a day is missed, it will be the student's responsibility to find out about assignments, and catch up with any missed material.

Behavior and Conduct:

·  Will account for 5% of the total grade.

·  The school rules will be strictly enforced. Refer to the handbook for details.

·  I strongly emphasize that plagiarism will not be tolerated. Incidents of academic dishonesty will be reported to the administration.
