8.Care of Children and Young People

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Primary care management

Deal effectively with abuse of children and young people. Safeguarding children and young people, understanding that:

the welfare of children and young people must he the paramount consideration and can help to justify actions that challenge ethical and professional norms

GPs are usually family focused, but in dealing with Child Protection and vulnerable children and young people, a focus on the family risks losing sight of the child

Often children and young people in special circumstances are ‘invisible’ to the system because they live in the shadow of their parents problems

Dealing effectively with abuse of children and young people involves recognising the clinical factors, knowing about local arrangements for child protection, referring effectively and playing a part in assessment and continuing management including prevention of further abuse.

10. Gender –specific Health Issues: Women’s Health

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Person centred care

Communicate sensitively with women about sexuality and intimate issues (particularly in recognising the impact of past sexual abuse and genital mutilation).

Specific problem solving skills

Recognise the prevalence of Domestic Violence and question sensitively when this may be an issue.

Domestic violence escalates during pregnancy and is a significant factor in national maternal and perinatal morbidity. For almost 30% of women who suffer domestic violence in their lifetimes, the first episode of violence occurred during pregnancy
