Matter Assessment
Tuesday, November 26th
Terms to Know
- Evaporation – The process of a liquid changing to a gas
- Freezing – The process of a liquid changing to a solid
- Gas - Matter that can be invisible and spreads out to fill the container it’s in
- Liquid – This matter can be poured and takes the shape of its container
- Matter – Something that takes up space and has mass
- Melting – The process of a solid changing into a liquid
- Physical Properties – Shape, color, size, texture and mass are all examples of this
- Solid – This matter has a specific shape
- Texture – How an object feels
- Volume – The measure of the amount of space an object takes up
- Weight – The amount of matter that makes up an object (also known as Mass)
Concepts to Know
- EVERYTHING is made of matter
- Physical properties are things that can be observed, measured or described when looking at an object
- There are 3 main states of matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas
- Water can exist in all three states:
Solid – Frozen water (ice)
Liquid – Water you can drink or swim in
Gas – Water Vapor (steam) - To change a liquid to a solid, you need to cool it (think water to ice – you put it in the freezer)freezing
- To change a liquid to a gas, you add heat to it (think water – you boil it and you see steam rise from the pot)evaporation
- To change a solid to a liquid you add heat to it (if your ice cube warms up, you have liquid water)melting
- Liquids and Gases take the shape of their containers.
- Particles in matter – Solid particles are packed close together, Liquid particles slide past one another, Gas particles free float and bounce off of things they come in contact with
