LEARNING OBJECTIVE (WALT)
To explore what a stereotype is. To understand the effect of drugs on the body.

TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Introduction
Introduce lesson objectives. Give groups of children photo cards of various people and one name of a drug (including some of the most common and well known) e.g. tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, heroin. Get children to identify which person would be most likely to take the drug and which would be least. Discuss that we often don’t know how to tell for sure and anybody could be a drug user.
Discuss the idea of stereotypes.
Display and review the previous drawings of drug users completed during Lesson 4 and discuss.
MAIN TEACHING AND LEARNING
Whole class Activity
Use a short scenario story/ video clip about characters making different choices. These may be drug related or not e.g. individuals wondering whether to try smoking/alcohol (or not). Discuss why different people in the story may have made different decisions
Explain that not as many teenagers drink or smoke as we may think.
Grouped Activity 3
Ask children in groups to role play a scene where they may feel pressured to take drugs. Ask one group member to have a ‘remote control’ to freeze the role play. When the role play is frozen ask actors to verbalise their thoughts e.g. I don’t feel I can say no in front of my friend Peter. Ask remote control operator to note down a few of the responses.
Children could take a digital image of the freeze frame to put into PowerPoint and annotate.
DIFFERENTIATION
Provide scripts of scenarios.
PLENARY
Discuss issues. How did it feel to be in that situation? What must you do? Like to previous risk lesson.
KEY QUESTIONS

2.  Which drugs are legal?
3.  What names do we know for different drugs?
ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
The children understand what a drug is. The children can identify illegal and legal drugs.
