Description of Service
The Learning Disability service covers the populations of Liverpool and Sefton with 2 community bases, a respite facility and an inpatient unit at Mossley Hill Hospital – The STAR Unit. The Asperger Team is based within this service at Olive Mount which is our main base in Liverpool.
We work with men and women who have learning disabilities, providing advice, information and support in the following areas:
· People in challenging situations
· People who are also experiencing mental health difficulties
· Helping people with their communication skills
· Personal relationships and sexuality
· Skills Enabling
· Accessing Health Services
· Person-centred work & planning
We work with people in a number of ways: On a one-to-one basis, In groups, With carers & families, With staff teams
Setting Where Work Carried Out
·  Most of the trainee’s work will be carried out at the base for team meetings, CPA meetings, supervision. Liverpool area for home visit and “the STAR unit”, inpatient facility at Mossley Hill Hospital.
·  There will be opportunities to work in the community, especially in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and social services
·  The trainee will also have the opportunity to assess liaison referrals from general adult psychiatry, medical colleagues at Royal Liverpool University Hospital
·  The trainee will undertake clinical assessments at A&E Departments at Aintree and Royal Liverpool University Hospitals when on call.
·  The trainee will have the opportunity to visit Mersey Care Trust’s Liverpool Asperger Team and Epilepsy, Genetic clinics in other trusts.
General Overview of Training Experience and Job Role
1.  Supervise, monitor and assist other junior doctors.
2.  Liaise between nurses, patients, relatives, carers, senior medical staff and other professionals and providers of care.
3.  Take part in rostered emergency work.
4.  Study for higher examination and maintain continued professional development.
5.  Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
6.  Undertake audit at various times throughout the rotations.
7.  Co-operate with members of the Human Resources department when
monitoring hours of work and other HR issues.
8.  Attend induction in each hospital or new department
9.  Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave
10.  Update diaries and calendars of shifts, study leave and annual leave
Responsibilities of Trainee
Supervise, monitor and assist other junior doctors in the day to day management of inpatients
Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled.
Attend 1 new clinic and 2 follow up outpatient clinics per week.
Provide support to the respite unit
Dictate discharge summaries.
To maintain up to date electronic and other medical records to a high standard.
To attend CPA/Care Coordination meetings.
To provide support to MDT members and to see carers/relatives as required.
To prepare medico-legal reports under consultant supervision, where possible.
Attend the regional learning disability and local general adult academic programmes where you will be expected to present cases, journal papers and audits.
Psychotherapy Training
Attendance at psychotherapy Balint group sessions.
