EducationOfficer - Japan Society
Location: London£23 - 25k depending on experience
The Japan Society is the leading independent body in the United Kingdom dedicated to the enhancement of the British-Japanese relationship in all its facets. It is a membership organisation and educational charity whose core programmes include approximately 80 academic, business and cultural events each year, provision of small grants, publication of periodicals and books, and maintenance of a small historic library.
The education programme is central to the Society's mission and is geared to those teaching and studying about Japan in the UK, particularly in primary and secondary education, with an emphasis on Japanese studies rather than language. We have a wide range of loan materials available for schools; provide a comprehensive support service for those wishing to develop links with schools in Japan, including the bilingual ‘Japan UK LIVE!’ website; coordinate visits to schools by Japanese volunteers; organize workshops and develop teaching materials.
We are now recruiting anEducation Officer. This is a full-time position critical to the delivery of our services to schools. The successful applicant will have a range of skills but emphasis will be placed on classroom teaching experience, an understanding of the education system in the UK, an awareness of the needs of teachers and pupils and knowledge and understanding of Japan.
The Education Officer will be comfortable working closely with colleagues in a small team, reporting to the Head of Education and liaising with others working remotely on the school links website. He/she will have the opportunity to develop particular areas of interest, depending on background and previous experience. The ability to take initiative and be creative will enable you to get the most out of this job.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Maintain the Japan Society's relationships with schools
Provide support and advice to teachers on ways to incorporate work on Japan in the curriculum. Market, administer and maintain the Society's collection of loan resources. Ensure that the schools' database is up to date.
- Development of teaching materials
Working with classroom practitioners and subject specialists, develop age-appropriate materials targeted to the needs of schools in delivering Japan-related themes and topics within the curriculum.
- School linking
Assist with the school links programme including matching of schools in Japan and the UK and providing follow up advice and support to schools in developing their links.
- Workshops and Conferences
The Japan Society runs its own annual Sixth Form Japan Day, as well as partnering with the Japan Foundation on the teacher-focussed Japan Conference for Schools. Take the lead on organization of these events, as well as a programme of regional workshops and seminars for school teachers.
- Assisting with other areas of the education programme
Provide occasional support to colleagues managing the Japan in Your Classroom school visit scheme and the Japan Society Small Grants programme. With the Head of Education, develop partnerships with other institutions to deliver relevant projects and activities.
Skills required:
- Experience of teaching, in either the UK or Japan, and a good understanding of the British and Japanese school systems is essential.
- Excellent communication skills in English, written and spoken, as well as strong organizational abilities.Knowledge of Japanese language is advantageous, but not essential.
- Good IT competence. You will need as a minimum a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Experience working with databases is advantageous
- Flexibility and a willingness to get involved, when necessary, in any aspect of the Society’s activity as part of a small team.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK. The Japan Society cannot offer visa support.
